Are all HDMI cables really the same? Specially for 3D TV's.

I have always understood that an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable. So when buying one for your home use, get the cheapest one you can get. As the picture will look the same either way. Is that the same for 3D TV's? I was looking at Monster cables and Sony cables and noticed they had little notifications on them for their own particular features. How one is fast and so on. One gives better color and things of that nature. Is this true and HDMI cables got better and different with me not looking? If not that, do you need a better or different type of HDMI cable for 3D TV?

This. The only reason they use gold is because it's a better conductor than most metals.

no theyre more or less the same. However i believe only the newer version of hdmi cables (1.4) allow for 3d and has built in ethernet. So make sure u dont get a 1.2 version cable or something if u want 3d

I read somewhere that for a 3DTV you need a 1.4 HDMI cable, I'm not 100% sure if that's true or not though.

I imagine the mid-priced ones would probably last longer than the cheapest ones if you bent them back and forth 10,000 times, but other than that they're about the same. It's a digital signal - it either gets from point A to point B unaltered, or else you get a black screen.

Spec is the only real difference of importance, although many 1.3 cables will function at 1.4 speeds without any issue, so it's not likely you'll run into problems.

Just wondeirng because looking at the Monster cables for instance, they have different version that are more expensive and have different grades of speed.

Not always - you don't get interference in the same way as analog cables, but a bad cable (or a cable that's too long) can introduce signal loss, which usually shows up as sparkling pixels.

If you buy cables like that from a retail store, you're more than likely to get ripped off (as they mark up the cables in the hundreds of percent). But them online. you can get a great cable for under $10 in most circumstances (unless you need a 100 foot cable, lol). Just make sure that the specs are what you need.

Don't fall for that - it's all marketing nonsense. [QUOTE="DJ_Lae"] Not always - you don't get interference in the same way as analog cables, but a bad cable (or a cable that's too long) can introduce signal loss, which usually shows up as sparkling pixels.

Unless the TC is running cable across 100 meters of ground, next to a couple of helicopters and a nuclear reactor, that's usually not something that you notice in real-world application. You are correct in that you can get interference in digital cables, but it's not a real issue with 99% of end consumers.

Yeah it makes no difference at all, it will be as good as a regular cable at best. A digital connection is not subject to interference in the same way as an old-fashioned analog coaxial cable.

HDMI cables are one of the biggest scams at stores.. They intentionally only sell cables that are upwards to $50 to $100.. When they can be had online for a fraction of the price with little to no difference what so ever.

Digital signals are the same regardless of cable.

Digital output is binary. It's either off or on. There's no in-between signal.

Monster cable is good for analogue signals like surround sound speakers, but even then they're only good for durablity and lifespan. They hardly output better than cheaper brands.

I recommend Monoprice.comfor cables. They sell them cheap at wholesale.

The different standards matter but the shielding, jitter and gold-plated connectors don't really matter unless you're using 100ft cables in an acid full physics lab.

Dude a couple of months ago I purchased a Samsung LED 3D HDTV 46", man the picture was awesome. but it had input lag... I tried using a regular HDMI cable (a sony and the one that comes with an xbox). Since I play fighters lag input is a big deal. so I returned it. That same day I purchased a Sony LED 3D HDTV 46", and also purchased a monster cable for like 1000 hertz wich is supposedly transmits display information like 4 times faster than a regular cable. Well... so far so good, no input lag what so ever.

Light travels the same speed no matter what kind of cables you buy. The whole "You have to spend $100 for 'good' cables" business mantra is just a way to rip the consumer off. Monster pays Best Buy and other stores to up-sell their products, and they are grossly over-priced. A $5 HDMI cable will do the same thing that a $100 cable will. But for $95 less.

that is a problem witht he TV not the cable. samsungs LED tv use a lot of video processing to interpolate frames when running at 120HZ. if you set the TV to game mode it removes most of that video processing and brings everything up to speed.

Not true. Digital signals can still degrade (it may be a digital signal but it's still being transported as an electrical current, and contrary to popular belief you can actually lose picture quality with an inferior cable in specific circumstances), and a better cable will be less prone to degradation. For the most part this isn't an issue because most people only use ~6 foot HDMI cables, but at longer runs or in some high-interference settings a better cable can be the difference between getting an image or not.

Thats in Euros, so thats roughly 17000 US Dollars. Cheap, eh?

Just the HDMI cables are way more expensive than my whole home cinema setup. Whoever wastes that much on digital cables should be slapped hard.

Everybody knows you need 12599€ Platinum HDMI cables for 3D. :P http://www.justhifi.de/Wire-World_Platinum-Starlight_a5355.html?r=ggshp5355&var=16488

But seriously any 1.4 HDMI cable will do, in fact please don't pay more than 10 bucks for it.

See this is what tech nerds, they don't get platinum spinners on their cars, they get twelve thousand dollar cables.

The world of interconnects and wires is just plain ridiculous.
