Books are as pointless as life itself if you feel that way. I enjoy reading and have for as long as I can remember and have never thought it pointless due to the fact that you can learn something, even if it is a novel.

I didn't learn anything important from Fall of Reach, am I doing it wrong?
Surely you read some words you had never seen before?

Even if you don't believe in religion the Bible is far from pointless. The stories contained in them are some of the earliest forms of literature and have influenced writers tremendously over the years.
I don't think so, Tim.The bible was influential because of its parables and the lessons contained within. Stuff like The Iliad, Epic of Gilgamesh, and Aeneid was way more influential to writers in terms of actual narrative.
Your post....is a funny one. Every Literature teacher would disagree with you.
[QUOTE="jimkabrhel"]this. Agreed. Scary stuff.... :(No. The anti-intellectualism that's growing in the US (and possibly other countries, I don't know), is disturbing.

No where did I say it wasn't influential in terms of narrative. But it's definitely NOT the earliest stories ever written, go ask any History or Ancient Lit teacher. Reading comprehension is hard.Your post....is a funny one. Every Literature teacher would disagree with you.

You never really stated your argument clearly, until now. He said it was tremendously influential. That's all. And you said I don't think so. Almost every great work of Literature alludes to Biblical stories and themes.
Was talking more about the "earliest form of literature" comment hence why the examples I used all pre-date the Bible by a century at least. I thought that much was obvious. You never really stated your argument clearly, until now. He said it was tremendously influential. That's all. And you said I don't think so. Bold just that part of the post then, dude...
alot of people sit down and read books.even if it's off a ipad and kindle people will always read them
I've only read a couple of books that I've really enjoyed, and I really just can't sit down and read unless I have to. I don't find it fun.
Yes. So is history. Who needs it? Not our governments. And not us. We should burn all books into a pile on the city streets.LOXO7Down with books!!!

That reminds me of a book called Fahrenheit 451 and an episode on Twilight Zone where books and thus librarians were considered obsolete (great episode by the way) and thus destroyed or killed.
They aren't pointless no and I do understand why some people enjoy them.
I personally am not into books all that much but that's just me.
i would be willing to argue against that. books just take longer to consume. Whenever i've had a book that i'm fully engrossed in, the entertainment value is always greater then movies or games. Because the entire focus is on the story and illustrating that story through words. They don't have the time limits or repetitive game mechanic issues that movies and games have. No,but they pale in comparison to other forms of entertainment like movies & games.

Ahem.....books are very fast compared to games.
Games are INTERACTIVE,and they last for so long.
As a format,they can't compare to videogames.

As a story telling medium books far surpass games.
