A few of my friends keep telling me that Catholics aren't Christians, rather they of a separate religious faith. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Catholicism a brach of Christianity, just as much as Presbyterians or Protestants are? And what about Mormonism? Would that be considered part of Christianity or a cult (which some of my friends tell me)?

Thats what I keep telling them. Their reasoning is that that their beliefs/customs are different from Christians, therefore they're somehow not Christians...

No I wasn't looking for the word cult. I was referring in how they don't have the central tenets of Christianity and thus there is some disagreement as to the term being applied to them. Nonetheless, why single out one belief system as a cult?

Well They're Protestants and Presbyterians, I'm not too sure of the differences between them. I'll go research on that now.

That's a pretty unsatisfying response, particularly since there was no orthodox church until there was also the RC for them to distinguish themselves from one another.

Eh, it's essentially bribing someone to be a moral person. I don't like it personally, but it does cause people to do good things, which is definitely commendable.

Catholics were the first Christians, in that they derived from the followers of the Apostles. The main distinguishing feature of the Catholic faith is the individual's relationship with God through the intercession of the Virgin Mary and the Eucharist.

Protestants came about as a result of Martin Luther's protest against some of the practices of the Catholic church. Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Puritans, Evangelicals, Pentacostals are all Protestants. The main distinguishing characteristic of Protestant faith is the individual's direct relationship with God.

Church of England (aka, Anglican Church or Episcopalian) came about as a result of Henry VIII's desire to divorce his wife. The Catholic Church forbade divorce, so he basically said "F U. I'll make my own church." The Church of England functions in a similar manner to the Catholic church.

Mormons (aka Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LDS) believe in the Holy Bible. The also believe that the Book of Mormon is another religious scripture recording the word of God. Mormons believe that an angel revealed the Book of Mormon to Joseph Smith in the form of golden plates. Mormons believe that Jesus Christ ministered to Native Americans in North America.

Not necessarily. Buddhism, Hinduism and even Islam acknowledge Jesus Christ as a prophet, but those are not Christians. Christians specifically believe that Jesus Christ is not just a prophet, but the Son of God, and King of the Nations (the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, etc.). Unfortunately, many Christians today only believe in Christ as a Saviour, but they rarely perceive him as a King.

Er...intercession is not a requirement of the Catholic faith.
