I tried elevators and escalators many times, which are both electrical varieties that can get you to various levels in a building.

I know that:

  • Elevators allow strollers and wheelchairs and save space, but it is possible, but very rare to end up trapped in an elevator after a building's electrical power went off for a duration;
  • Escalators do not allow strollers and wheelchairs and takes space, but will be treated as stairs if it is not working, so you won't get trapped.

Which one is better?

I like the fact that you can't get trapped on an escalator but you can't go up more than one floor at a time.

I can try living in an elevator but with an escalator I cannot. I suppose it will get annoying with all those strangers coming into my home . In the rare event that I get trapped in an elevator with someone , perhaps we can pass the time with some "activities" .

Elevators are very exciting for me. For some reason I've always found them fun, and I've never grown out of it. The faster the better. Escalators are only fun if they're really steep, fast and have perfectly sized steps for running down; I'm thinking London Underground here.

I like elevators better most of the time, I've always been a little afraid of getting sucked into an escalator and crunched to pieces.

Being trapped in an elevator is fairly rare. I prefer elevators since I actually get disoriented by the lines on the "steps" of an escalator, and I have a slight fear of losing balance and falling off it. I feel safer in an elevator.

It's not impossible, it just isn't that common. You could use an elevator daily for your entire life and never get stuck.

I am always nervous getting in an elevator, especially a crowded one

given my size, I always tend to make the elevator spring down a couple inches initially haha. Scares the crap out of people sometimes.

I believe elevators won't actually operate if the combined weight of all people in the elevator is greater than the maximum weight the elevator is tested to withstand. The doors won't close and some sort of sound will be made to alert that there is too much weight.

Yes the sound will be the elevator crashing into the ground after dropping several hundred feet. And then the doors won't close.

Because, you know, with the millions of elevators in existance, we hear of elevator freefalls ALL the time.

I think the last time I heard of one was in the 1940's.

I like flat escalators, it's so much fun to run down them!

I remember when I was a kid I always wanted to go to the supermarket for those huge flat escalators! Elevators are boring. :? Unless they're tall, fast and you can look at the city. But other than that, I have used an elevator more than... probably more than 2000 times in my life. It's not exactly exciting. Even using the stairs is more fun.

Since it seems to be an interesting topic - I've only been stuck in an elevator 3 times. The first time I was scared because I was 5 and watched a horror movie about someone free falling from an elevator and landing in a haunted basement. The other two times were just "FFS -_- I wanna go home already." None of them lasted more than 20 minutes. My aunt went through elevator free fall, she was completely safe though.

konvikt_17

You don't even have to keep the stroller level. I could tilt our cheap-o 'umbrella'-type stroller forward 20 or 30 degrees before my kid was in danger of falling out, and I could tilt them backwards even farther.

Certain strollers are going to be very difficult to get on a non-flat escalator. Such as double/triple strollers and other less standard kinds. A common single stroller will probably work fine.

I also wouldn't really want to risk it on escalators that are taking me several stories upwards.

Elevators feel weird. I always think it's going to drop.

I'd go with escalators.
