I was looking at CT's website for the Obamacare exchanges and I found a document on exemptions to the individual mandate.

One of the things the document says is:

"

Membership in an Indian Tribe

An individual who is a member of an Indian tribe, including any Alaska native village, that is recognized as eligible for the special programs and services provided by the United States to Indians.

Yes, if you're a member of a federally recognized tribe then you can file for exemption.

They probably get the equivalent in those special programs and services.

Native American's pay all federal tax.

The only benefits they get is that if they live in a reservation, and the reservations turn a profit they must share the profit equally among the tribe. They pay social security, taxes, must sign the selective service papers, and they'll pay for obamacare. T

here may be an exception if the tribe provides their own form of healthcare that the meets the governments requirements.

I remember reading somewhere Obamacare needs something like 2.7-3 million young people to pay in full to turn a profit - don't think it'll happen.

You can always check for yourself. It does appear that there are special rules, but then again there seem to be a lot of special rules pertaining to Native Americans mostly to make reperations for the fact that we sort of obliterated their tribes and way of life in the past.

Casinos are the new way of life.

Yeah I think I read something on yahoo answers about them getting health-insurance through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

That logic never makes sense to me; than why not give all the black people on Martin Luther King Blvd monthly pay checks because America cultivated and raised them like cattle for over 120 years?

You could probably trick a few people, but you would most likely get debunked rather quickly as people could just go to the us government website and compare notes. Speaking of which is that currently shut down? It would be the time to try that little trick.

The requirements are hard regardless, my ex-girlfriend couldn't claim her tribe as she needed 60+%. The affirmative action type benefits will be gone in a good 50 years I assume.

what's the threshold, from my experience my native friends tribal ID cards had peoples native purity written in percentages on the back of their tribal ID cards, like x% this, y% that, and so on so what if someone tries claiming their great great great great grandfather was like 1/64th Cherokee is he exempt?

That would be impossible to prove, so nothing would happen.

I was on Library of Congress website and Speaker.gov and the gov'ts healthcare site, plus the pdf you linked to and those sites were working fine, though LOC said that due to the shut down some of the features (like asking a librarian) might not be available.

Apparently nobody clicked the shutdown button on those servers.

It's worth a shot. But I think you might actually have to live on the reservation.

Funny, the Census names them as "American Indians" and then there are organizations like the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Maybe most of them don't mind being called "Indians", but I do think it's funny when white people like to be offended on the behalf of minorities to prove they're not racist (not saying you guys are, just in general). Pretty sad world we live in.

LOL, I hate when textbooks do that: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, Native Americans, and then...white people. O________________O

I think it's funny that we call white people Caucasian because the word actually refers to not only Europeans but also North Africans, Central Asians, Middle Easterners, and even some people from the Indian subcontinent.

The people we know as Native Americans actually crossed the Bering Strait during the last ice age about 12,000 years ago.

Yes. Native Americans on reservations have been getting healthcare from the Federal Government since the early 1800s.

Off the reservation they are like any other American.

Oh god, it still annoys me when American's call Native American's "Indians". lonewolf604

That kinda cracks me up. I live on the Olympic Peninsula and have quite a few friends who are from the Tribes and none of them seem to have a problem with term indian. The opposite in fact. they love calling themselves FBI, Full BLooded Indian. the tribes around here, the S'Kallam, Suquamish, and Elwha tribes are really very good at making money and also giving back to the rest of the community as well.

As for the exemption, idk but Im sure they get it. They get some other nice perks too with stuff like fishing and hunting, and land use, and where they fall into the justice system if they commit a crime, and a bunch of other stuff too.
