Are normally offensive words used in an unoffensive way still offensive?

Such as the famed "N" word. Now everyone know that word was created to dehumanize african americans so the white slave owners would feel bad doing what they were doing to them. Sam deal with calling Germans Krauts in WW2, dehumanizing the enemy makes them easier to kill.

However, if i were to say an offensive word such as the "N" word in a totally freindly and unoffensive way, and the person i'm speaking to knows that, is it still offensive.

Basically what i'm getting to, is the word itself offensive? Or is the context/person the thing that is offensive?

The context, unless you're really sensetive.

With that word its best just to avoid. But, yeah, if used in an unoffensive way, it's probably okay. I don't know, I just avoid using that word just to be safe.

Well yeah me too, this is hypothetical and more ideological. You can substitute any term you wish for the example.

Again just like Chris Rock said..."It is not the word itself but the context in which it is ued in." The context is more important.

I feel the context is what makes words offensive.

Of course the context matters, but the context is broader than the conversation you are having at any given instance. If you use it in public, even if in conversation with a friend who you believe won't be offended by it, if someone else hears it, they are totally justified in taking offense.

Well, i find it pretty annoying when hispanic gangster kids use the n-word to greet each other. Actually its EXTREMELY stupid.

Depends on the person, since "offensive" is subjective. I don't get offended if a person uses, say, "homosexual" in a conversation about homosexuality. But some people do, regardless of the context.

Context is important....though with some words I don't see how they can't be offensive just due to the meaning of the word.

Context. I mean, I can say that I have a huge glass of water on my desk that I'm about to chug, and it's not a racial slur.
