I don't mean this in an offending way, I've just been thinking about it, comparing Humans to Animals. Are Races in Humans, what Species in Animals are?

Like you get different type of Spiders?

Or, is it more like how you could get a Black Labrodor or a White Labrodor?

Same thing goes for mix raced, is that like Cross breeding in animals?

Please dont take offence from these questions.

Different kinds of dogs, like labradors and poodles, are the same species, just different breeds. I believe that if they were different species, they wouldn't be able to produce offspring.

I think Species are split into Races. Like Networks have Channels.

No. Differences in race would not be considered different species.

Humans *are* animals; the "sapiens" in homo sapiens represents our collective species.

No, when people of the same species breed they produce fertile offspring but between species offspring at the very best are still infertile. But a european can have a fertile child with someone from china.

Hope i helped :)

No. A black man and a white man are the same species. The different races are really just superficial distinctions.

Race? Maybe, but Species is most definitely a scientific/biological construct, to the best of my knowledge.

No. A species is a population of organisms capable of producing viable offspring. Any race can produce children with any other race, so they're the same species.

We are all collectively called the human race, skin color has nothing to do with species. Dogs are dogs, cats are cats, humans are humans.

By the way this topic made me facepalm, but I have used that image too much this week.

They may produce offspring, but they might be sterile like Mules (mix of horse and donkey).

All humans are of the same species. To be considered a different species, the organism in question must have a distinctive difference in DNA from...well the species you are trying to distinguish it from! Race, in humans, is akin to the small variations you find in animals of the same species; it's just more easily visible.

Not strictly speaking; Linnean taxonomy used for sorting species predates the discovery of DNA by more than two centuries.

Same way as any regular animal. Just because it's weird doesn't make it some crazy half breed.

Isnt the rule that if you are the same species that babies can be made?
Or something like that, like how Tigers and Lion sperm embrio and egg can be mixed to make a baby. Though infertile and too big for its own good, you get my point I think maybe possibly:D

That's ONE definition of what makes a distinct species. It's also the one I personally favor. But there is a real debate over exactly what makes species separate.

Read the 'Evolution' part of the link I provided. It'll explain the basics but it will also state that the evolution of the platypus remaisn somewhat of a mystery. However they believe that the platypus, or platypus like creature, was one of the first to evolve from lizards since they have both lizard and mammalilan parts.
