I usually don't read much outside of college, but when I do I usually like to stick with books that will challenge me, provoke thought, and perhaps even improve my own writing.

I've always been kind of curious about the Harry Potter books, but given the size of the series it always seemed like a lot of commitment for something that I've always imagined would be shallow and cliche.

Am I right in thinking this? For those who have read the books - has reading Harry Potter inspired, challenged or touched you in some way?

FINALLY so this topic isn't too much about me: Do you think Harry Potter belongs along side Alice, Huckleberry Finn and Frodo Baggins?

They are very good and with each sequel you get more and a better story. You should definetly read them. When each new one came out it was pretty much impossible for me to put down.

Yeah, I would say they are worth reading. They are entertaining to say the least. Well written for the intended age group as well, but for a college student they will not be breaking any ground with your vocabulary or challenge your capacity either, so if the entertainment value isn't enough, skip them.

Without a shadow of a doubt I can say everyone should read them. A lot of people do like them a lot. Me personally, I'm not a fan. To put it briefly, I think it's just a decent story that's poorly written.

They're okay. The last one's disappointing because it abandons the structure that was firmly established in the previous six, but they aren't terrible or anything like that.

I think they are, especially if you don't spoil them by watching the movies. You'll get really sucked in and create theories and ideas yourself, they were easily one of the best book series I have ever read.

I believe they are worth reading. Althogh you will probably find the first two books a bit childish.

No, there are much better books out there. Well, I guess reading the first three is fine (although the second is fairly meh), but after that it's not worth continuing.

They're pretty easy to read, so you can fly right through them. So even if you don't like them you won't be wasting much time.

They're not hard to read. Pretty easy to get into, and they have some pretty nice characterization and some quirky touches. Stay away from the fandom, though.

Yes, they are definitely worth reading. I've read all the books multiple times and can honestly say it's one of my favorite series.

They are very entertaining and suck you into the world Rowling created. I am not sure I would call them challenging though, but at least it works as an example of how to create an enganging world. May I also recommend the Odd Thomas books by Dean Koontz. Those books have incredible characterization and suspense, the first book being my all-time fav book.

The last 3 books are amazing, imo. You might get bored while reading the first few because they're more aimed for kids, but it's worth it once the series gets darker and it starts making connections to the previous books.

They're OK. The two things I disliked the most about them was the middle-school romance sub-plots, and deciphering all the UK slang.

Well, it's a kids book, what kind of ending could they give it?

Although the epilogue was incredibly fan-fiction ish.

Anyways, 1-4 are just awesome, after that the books start getting way too emo.

Honestly I gave her kudos for at least doing what I didn't quite expect in the ending. There were only so many ways she could've ended it, but I think it was excellent. I do agree though, the epilogue could've easily been discarded..

It wasn't just the epilogue. She totally destroyed the world she had created with deux ex machina attempts to finish the story. And they didn't make sense within the world she had constructed.

She destroyed the world she created. Fantasy should have specific rules that exist in the created world. But if one wants to read the books....it's certainly their privilege. Just be aware.

Me too. I think "destroys" is a bit of a hyperbole. Some confusing contradictions in the way some things work, but "destroys?" That's a bit much.

When you write specific rules for a fantasy world and then contradict them....you destroy the world. I take it you are a fan?

They're not great literary masterpieces but they're entertaining enough to read them. They're easy to read so even though it's pretty long you can get through it pretty quickly. I do think that the last book kind of ruined the series though.

Also the last 100-200 pages were one huge deux ex machina, combined with random made up stuff she decided to introduce at the very end to make the ending work...

Her entire last book was deux ex machina.....though she had used it before...it wasn't as grating. The entire premise of DH was to contradict what came before.

I started reading them when I was 6 or 7 (over ten years ago), so I followed the series with great anticipation for each new book. I'm a huge fan. With that said, I think that the books are worth reading. They're entertaining, interesting, clever, and quick reads despite the length of the books. If you're into fantasy and magic and all of that, the books will definitely be page turners. If you're not into stuff like that, then it'll probably be pretty dry for you. I'm 18 now and I still get a lot of enjoyment out of Harry Potter even though I'm an 'adult.' The first two books were definitely written for the younger crowd, but they get darker, deeper, and more mature with each book after that. They're not childish. I think you should at least give the first few a try.
