So the ToU decides the punishment too?jointed

The mods are taught to uphold the ToU. It isn't their fault that it is a vague set of rules that is completely open to interpretation and has hardly anything concrete to make moderations a simple process.

[QUOTE="tenczas9"]no the mods are horrible because I once called someone a "noob" and a "moron" in a forum and got a point loss for it.........lol if thats considered bad I'd hate to think how many people get banned in forums.tenczas9

Well that is flameing they had every right to mod you, I have seen some sights where you can be banned on the spot for it.

Has anyone ever been out in the real world? The way they moderate seems like they're treating us as 5 years olds that have never been outside. Walk a lap in a high school hallway and you'll hear about 20x worse than this....come on now. Some of us need to grow up a tad :p

Yes, but let's not forget most highscoolers think that swearing makes them cool. Which leads to excessive, pointless amounts of cursing.

[QUOTE="Jandurin"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Considering I had his quote in my post....that shouldn't have been necessary now should it. And no I didn't. Petty to the max.LJS9502_basic

You can't blame them for not modding his post if it wasn't reported :? If you've ever read the AtM forum, they never seem to take things into context, and they NEVER EVER read the posts quoted within the post they're moderating. At least, not in my experience.

If that's true then mods are unnecessary. They ARE PERMITTED to moderation violations they see on their own. I had his quote in my post...which they def saw since they modded my account.:|

And any moderation should be looked at for context...otherwise every post made is liable to be a moderation.

Maybe they have a vendetta out against you. I don't want to accuse anyone of abusing their power, but I hae seen certain mods pick favorites and guys who they are hard on.

Who would moderate if there were no moderators? Once again, I don't think most of them read the other quotes.Jandurin
That comment was in regard to mods waiting for reports in order to moderate. If they don't moderate something they see without a report that make them obsolete. And if they aren't reading what's quoted then there is a major problem. It's not like they have to seek out what the post they are reading was in response to in that case.

Note: I'm not picking on mods....merely the system.

I know mods are still human some of them will have a layer of corruption, but that doesn't excuse it. Also I don't like to generalise so I won't say that about all of them.

And, maybe it's the minority of moderations that occur without quote readings or context taken... but I've had it happen to me, and I know others have had it happen to them from perusing Ask the Mods. Irritating.

Yeah bias exists but you can't let it color decisions. I'm the boss at work....obviously I have employees I prefer over others. But I'm fair to ALL of them and there isn't one...that would say I'm not.;)

Exactly. Funnily enough, I think it's only those who have power that need to be aware of their preferences and how it might affect things.

I don't have a firm understanding, but I remember hearing a former mod say that the report feature just shows the post and the mod has to decide if it is bad or not. They should fix that if they are just looking at the one post and not the disscusion as a whole. They also don't look at reported edited posts. I have seen one user post porn and even-though he was reported he had time to get rid of the pic so he got off.

Well, to be fair, if he was hosting it on an image hosting site.... he could have deleted it from the host site so that even if they looked at the edit history, all it would show is a link to an image hosting site, not to porn.

Well, I guess so. But holy **** do they ever moderate for such stupid and little reasons. Seems like everything here is offensive. I've been moderated 50 times in total (14 suspensions) and I highly doubt I deserved more than 10 of them.

No offense, but they're doing a horrible job. It's as if they don't give a crap about the community...at all.

jointed

not to mention they ban all the good users, certain people are like celebreties in the OT and deserve the kind of law enforcement celebrities get, aka a slap on the wrist.

how do they expect to make GS a better place if everyone gets banned.

Then they should erase the smileys....actually, it can be interpreted any way one wants.....and thus as I stated unless it's clearly trolling then it should be no actioned.;) But I don't see it with the conversation going on.

The secret is these so called "celebrities" need to learn from their moderations. If they don't...they do add up. Um....I don't recall any celebrities though.

This post is filled with win. I actually think as you get more noticed on GS, you get more likely to be moderated, as you'll be more likely to be reported.

I agree in that long term users should get more concessions. In reality though, it's the other way around. They figure, if you've been here longer, you should know better... so the punishments are harsher.

It the ToU are vague...that makes the violation vague....therefore, they should err on the side of caution and not moderate. ONLY if it's clearly a moderation should they act.LJS9502_basic

That is the major problem, there are not "clear" violations aside from posting porn, direct flaming or advertising.

It's the moderator who's to decides whether to warn, suspend or in some cases ban the user. What pisses me off is the ridiculous punishments...not the moderations.jointed

Still, if the rules laid out were clear from the start, there wouldn't be any question as to whether or not a moderation is just. The moderator interpretation comes from the ToU's vagueness and causes them to have to interpret a users post.

I don't agree with many moderations myself but I know it isn't the mods fault for having to uphold a vague set of rules that doesn't cover most of the things people are actually moderated for.

I can't bring myself to blame the moderators for the failure of the actual rules of the website. They are volunteers who give their time to better the community... it cannot be their fault for the legal team's inability to update the ToU to better represent what actual violations of the rules are.

They take into account the amount of time between. So, if it was a month between each trolling, it'd basically go back to "never trolled" status for punishment. This is my interpretation.

I was looking through my moderation history and one thing that really stands out was me being modded for saying that black people dont need reperations, and that freedom is the best thing a human being can have. I was modded for having a different opinion. I actually was confronted by the mod (I think, unless it was just a mod who agreed) and said "it undermined the civil rights movement" somehow? pretty clear cut example of bad modding

ever since then ive been trying to be a bit more discrete (you have to be around here), because I know I have a big target on my head for being conservative. I dont think all the lefties are out to get me, just the ones who really arent secure in their beliefs and are offended by others opinions.

Wow... just wow... :| How the hell can that be offensive? Hell, that doesn't even C-lassify as light trolling or flaming. It doesn't break the rules at all.

If I were a mod, I would ban you for your right-wing beliefs :x You and your opinions. :P

[QUOTE="spazmaticmof0"]Some of them are good and actually participate in posting, others are too strict when it comes to the ToU... Good people, they just need to lighten up. This is an OT forum, they need to have a little fun..Jandurin

I'm not trying to just go with what everyone else is saying, but most of the mods IMO do suck some serious balls. It seems they can never admit that they are wrong, with one of my previous moderations there was without a shadow of a doubt nothing against the TOU and I was modded. I complained yet they gave me their whole rant "I'm always right, deal with it, don't like it? go to customer support" but am I really going to waste my time dealing with that?

So until a mod wants to right a wrong (being my moderation) here's your chance (although I doubt they have the cahones), but until then I will continue to  at what a joke some of the team is. (not all)

Oh and to give an idea of what it was...

In the system wars forums the 360s ability to play xbox 1 titles is referred to as emulation, and emulation is by no means illegal (ever heard of thin clients?). In a thread asking what DS users would want to happen for the DS, I listed some absurd things that I knew would never come to the DS (halo, morrowind, majora's mask) and then I said NES/SNES emulation, that's what got me modded :| are you kidding me any mod with half a brain cell would realize I'm talking about a legal emulation which Nintendo would sanction and release. There is no way they can just assume I was referring to the illegal one (which I wasn't) and there is nothing in the post leading one to believe that.

So in the end I was modded because some inept mod didn't know that there were legal emulators...basically being modded for ignorance.

Still waiting for it to be fixed.

edit: I do appreciate the mods that keep the community a fun place to be, and I realize there is a large amount of work for such a small team, but come on, there are quite a few dumb choices being made.

It's easy to say that mods make bad decisions when you don't see the whole picture of everything they see and go through.

I mod on another big game site and I get the same criticism by people who have no idea what is really going on.

Tons of people say they get banned for no reason, when in reality no one gets banned for no reason. People create alt accounts for flaming, or just have history of being trolls which all counts against people in the long run. Or do things that break the TOS/TOU What one person might get away with might be the straw that broke the camels back for other users. Tons of people just have to hate on everyone and everything to make themselves feel better.

People say they've received no warnings when they have. Its certain people will deny everything until the end. I have people every day on a different site that swear up down and sideways they've NEVER received a warning, and I could pull up 5 from the last month that have been saved on a different board. Users don't have the right to demand to see all the posts made by someone that got them banned. Simple as that.

Also mods are less visible in the community because well, they're mods. They have a certain amount of work to do that doesn't allow them time to post in the same threads that have been made a thousand times. Plus, I'm reasonably sure some mods probably have alt accounts they post on just so there's no mod hate associated with it. Some people will go out of their way to hate on mods for no other reason than they're mods. I have an alt account on the site I post on and it's hilarious to see people that will call you a total SOB every day on your mod nick, and the same person will think you're awesome on your alt. For no other reason than some people need something to hate on.

Could be different on this site, but I've never seen any glaring problems.

Mods do an alright job. They do make some silly decisions though.

I posted a joke i heard from TV the other day, a show with no kind of certification so suitable for most people. Yet i was given a warning. I honestly couldn't believe it lol pretty funny stuff

Overall not bad

Nah, considering the number of mods to number of users, they do a fine job.

I am not going to speak unkind words, but I do get frustrated often with them. I have been modded several times. A few of those times, I understood why and I made mental notes about what NOT to do again; however several times I receive a PM stating that my account has been suspended for some random forum post. I cannot figure out why!!! It gets very frustrating! And I do not know what happened to my Old School icon in my profile... it just disappeared.

Well thats one part about being a mod that does suck. You will have to listen to certain demographic of people who are easily offended. I'm sure your joke/avatar was not offensive to 99.9% of users on the site. I'm sure the mods even thought it was funny, BUT when sites have advertising, or are trying to be family or kid friendly or whatever, those complaints from people who are offended have to be taken seriously, even as stupid as the complaints are. Sometimes mods hands are tied in that regard. And they have to be removed or moderated. And then people get bent over it.

Well what about when a mod has a chip on their shoulder, and you just happen to be the unlucky one to get modded? (and for nothing)
