Are there? Do you have to pass elemtary school or have the equivlant education to own a gun? (at legal gun owning age) If there aren't, I think they should have a simple intelligence test in order for you to be able to own a gun. Nothing serious, just a basic reading comprehesion test and math test a typical 5th grader could pass. Because I believe stupid people should not be able to own a gun =\

I doubt it, but dammit, there should be IQ requirements for all kinds of things.

In my state (VA) you have to be 21 to buy a handgun and 18 to buy a rifle/shotgun.

They tried to do that with voting. It is against the law.

Initially, I was like :?... but then when I thought about it, that's not a bad idea... why don't they have some kind of equivalence to a driver's license for guns? People can learn where to put them (that you shouldn't put it in places where kids can get a hold of them), learn how much damage they can do to a person (a visit to the mourge can do wonders) and maybe even give them a few dos and donts (like never try to use a bullet if you've forgotten where the can opener is).

You can't be a criminal and have to be a certain age, those are usually the only requirements, and I hope to God the only requirements. or so help me finish burning the constitution.

Yes, I guess that's a better idea than just a general intelligence test.

I understand what you're saying, we shouldn't walk all over the Constitution, but I want to keep weapons out of the hands of people who will misuse them and hurt themselves or others.

Which is unfortunate. A friend of mine, who I love to death, thought that Sarah Palin was one of the US Olympic gymnasts:| A great friend and a great person, but someone that out of it should not be allowed to elect the most powerful man on earth.

Not to be overly dramatic. But if our founding fathers knew how many innocent people die by legally bought guns, they'd burn the constitution themselves :?

Not only that, but times are completely different. Laws should be updated on a regular basis to adapt to the needs of an evolving population.

Well, If more restrictions were put in place, I bet if the murder rate did drop, I actually think it would go up, but if it did drop, it would be such an insignificant drop, there would really not be a reason to have the restrictions there. I think murder rates have more to do with American society in General, and nothing to do with what devises those people use to kill people with..

In Illinois you need a FOID (Firearm Owner Identification) card. Speaking of which, I still need to print out my application for mine.

Ugh, I knew I would be arguing this but I knew I wouldn't want to: so nevermind, I deleted my post minutes ago

Yeah, there definately needs to be some simple intelligence barriers for many freedoms. Also, I think there needs to be a proper training course as well. Many people don't know how to fire one or load one, and they end up doing something stupid and hurting themselves.

Shooting a gun isn't rocket science. There have been many intelligent people who killed innocent people. Stupid people should be able to defend themselves as well.

You do need to come up with the money, it does take some small amount of intelligence to acciure enough cash to afford a gun.
