I used to preach health and fitness, but as of late I've succumbed to enjoying a few butts every now and then with my buddies. Oddly enough, I feel guilty everytime I smoke one, and although I don't feel a sense of addiction, the thought of it does bug me when I see commercials of people with holes in their throat.

Are you currently a smoker? If not, have you ever been a smoker at one time or another? If so, how hard was it to quit? Is ganja a safer alternative, or can you not compare the two?

I started off as a part time smoker, became a full time smoker for about 5 years... and am now back to being a part time smoker.

aint nothing wrong with lighting a butt every now and then.... granted there is a propaganda campaign with unprecedented funding since the nazis trying to make smokers feel guilty and non smokers hate people that do partake.

ganja is a safer alternative, and a much safer alternative if you invest in a vaporizer you can even get vaporizers made for passing around, so your friends can be in on it too

Never smoked a cigarette or anything similar in my life and I'm 23. I've done a drug though... legally haha, I was in so much pain earlier this year with muscle spasms in my back that the doctors just ended up giving me a bottle of oxy contins or however you spell it just to get me through every day until the spasms went away. I had to take them at work once... boss thought it was pretty funny seeing how high I was.

I smoked a cigarette once just to feel the buz that people kill themselves for. And it wasn't too bad but about half way through I felt like the smoke was rotting my teeth and the inside of my mouth, I put it out and threw it away (I was 15 and it was my dads) and I went back inside and my breath, I could taste it, and I smelt it on my hands and clothes, I have to say I felt disgusting. I don't know how smokers do it.

edit: And also yes ganja is better for you, I'm pretty sure it's only downsides are getting breathing problems from inhaling smoke, though there are other methods like edibles and vaporizers.

I smoked from 1993-1997. Quit when I was about to get married and started up again when I got divorced. Been smoking again since 2002.

I used to smoke in the house, but I got tired of all my stuff turning yellow...even the walls. Now I either go outside, or if it's cold or windy (smoking in the wind sucks) I go to the bathroom and turn on the ceiling fan. The problem with smoking in the bathroom is it sticks to the walls, and when I shower the moisture on the walls will leach up the nicotine and so you end up with yellow streaks down the walls. So I try not to do that too much.

I have tried quitting since, but as you may have heard it's not that easy. The hardest cigarettes for me to give up are:

-First thing in the morning after brushing teeth (which is the second thing I do, after hitting the toilet)

-After eating

-After sex

-As I'm about to turn into bed

All the other cigarettes through the day are just fillers, and I could probably go without them if I really wanted to, but the above are absolute must-haves.

It's a terrible habit that costs me $80+ a month, and that's after dropping to low-price regional brand (Tahoe) as opposed to my preferred Camels. It's not even about a buzz anymore (haven't gotten a buzz of cigs since I was a teen) but just the need.

I'd love to quit, I worry myself over what my innards must look like often, but I've been smoking for so long now that it'd be like giving up pissing: probably not going to happen.

You must smoke ALOT.

I have never seen any yellow streaks or anything and i always smoke inside. Even when i used to smoke like a pack and a half a day back in college and my roommate smoked probably a pack a day.

I just make my own cigarettes now... costs about $2 a pack.

But ive never really been addicted.... if i ever felt like i needed a cigarette i would probably quit or at least severely cut back. Maybe you should try e-cigarettes, before i started making my own cigarettes and was looking for a lower cost alternative i tried them out.

I'm a non-voluntary second-hand smoker almost every day. The guy below us chain smokes in his apartment and there is not an air-tight seal between the two units. I've complained numerous times, but the landlady seems unwilling to do anything about it (and often denies being able to smell anything; but she is a smoker too, and lives on-site, so it would be highly hypocritical of her to do anything) and it also isn't against the lease agreement. Fortunately, it happens less in the summer when we can have the windows open, creating more positive pressure in the apartment, keeping it contained at the bottom of the stairs near the door (but I still get to smell it every day I leave and come home... what a welcoming smell). My GF and I are planning on moving soon though. Rent has gone through the roof.

Why don't you try e-cigs? replicate the feel of the nicotine and holding/smoking a real cig but without all the cancer.

Well, first off those cigarette commercials are just ridiculous propaganda. If that was common you'd see alot more people walking around with holes in their throats. I've never seen anyone with one of those outside of the hospital I work at and even those were for non-smoking related reasons.

I smoked for about 15 years and haven't touched a smoke for the last 3 1/2 years. If you smoke occasionally I don't really see a problem with it but just be careful you don't become addicted.

That's not fair to say. I don't believe all the nonsense about the health effects of second hand smoke but if a person doesn't smoke the smell can be quite bad. If the smell is invading his space then that's more than something to complain about. Even I really dislike the smell of cigarettes and I smoked for years. Of course it didn't bother me when I used to smoke.

I am not entitled to the ability to breathe clean air? I have chronic sinusitus because of it. At least when I encounter a smoker in public I can just keep walking past them, or avoid them completely. And I cannot "choose" to just up and move when something bothers me, the lease is signed for a year. I can choose not to go to the concert.

let me tell you a true story then.

My sister, lived in an apartment complex... and she complained about the smokers below her and how their smoke smell would come into her apartment sometimes. Then i went to visit her apartment and it reeked of ungodly cat feces, because she had a cat... i didnt smoke back then, but i would have gladly snorted an ashtray, rather than get within 100ft of that litterbox.

the problem is as people, we afford a degree of civility and tolerance towards others... except in the case of smokers where everyone feels its fine to spew their horrible indignant righteousness.

when i look for an apartment i look for an apartment that allows smoking, and doesnt allow pets. I dont move into an apartment complex that allows pets, then complain about the smell of the litterbox, because that would make me a douchbag.

We did, and not only was it ambiguously worded (to which we interpreted only on the patio, not inside) but the person who explained it to us said they were non-smoking units. And I really hope the cat urine smell from our cat's box is reverse-penetrating into his apartment... because he deserves every ounce of it (there are days where he must go through two packs in 4-5 hours).

rule number 1 of contract law, is always get it in writing.

but its funny you happen to have a cat, im sure yur cat's waste which you store in your apartment is ever more foul smelling.

seriously though, how can you complain about the smell of smoke when you pollute the air with the smell of animal waste? Sounds like neither party is really that concerned with maintaining a high standard of air quality.

why are your olfactory senses more justified than his? "I cant smell the cat poop with all that smoke in the way!"

Nope. Your sister is gross and needs to keep her apartment cleaner, especially the litter box.

The apartment owner was negligent by not doing something about the ventilation or sealing up the walls.

The line about snorting an ashtray was quite funny though.

Everyone has different scents that annoy/disgust them. Cigarette smoke and drunkenness (I never noticed it before I started work as a security guard and dealt with drunks) are the two that get me furious, they are excessively disgusting. And the only point at which our cat's box stinks is when we use sub-standard litter (never again) or she misses. We use scented, clumping litter and a deodorizer when it makes it past the scent. Maybe we just feed her better than most owners or she knows how to bury it properly. I actually don't mind the smell of cat urine or feces, especially compared to human feces, human vomit or rotting flesh. But those are just pungent smells, not physically disgusting. We were mislead when signing the lease and have tolerated it so far because it was reasonably priced (until this year) and didn't happen excessively until this last winter (maybe a bigger hole opened up?). And cat waste hasn't been shown to increase risk in developing lung diseases.

No cat owner takes every BM directly to the dumpster.... at least none ive ever met. Her apartment was plenty clean, but poop in a box, is poop in a box.

and an apartment owner doesnt need to put an airtight seal on an apartment.... otherwise the tenants would die of suffocation. If you want all apartments to have ventiliation standards, gotta take that up with the state legislature i suppose.

Ive lived in alot of crap apartments in my days... and if i had a problem with a neighbor, ill tell you exactly what i did. I knocked on their door, and in the nicest and most pleasant manner possible, asked them to tone down what was the problem. Guess what, it always worked. Never once talked to the property manager.

Nah I don't smoke. Too expensive, it would make my beard and teeth yellow, my clothes would smell and as I enjoy exercising and hiking I want my lungs to be in tip-top shape. Mostly though, I've endured many years of cancer treatment, and it's utter and complete HELL. Pure misery, and I'll do everything in my power to avoid it. I used to judge those who smoke. I don't now, I just feel for them. I think if many knew what they were risking and the unpleasantness of chemo, they'd stop. Then again, many continue to smoke through their trachea holes so who knows? I'm not a smoker so I can't attest to the power of nicotine addiction.

Been smoking for 5 years and I enjoy it. I don't smoke much though, maybe 7-8 cigarettes a day. I also smoke cigars and ganja on occasions.

whats the risk? lung cancer at 70? seems like a pretty ok risk to take when yur at an age of various diseases competing to kill you.

if lung cancer nails me a couple years before burgers and pizza, im not gonna be too upset about it.

my grandfather never smoked and went through heart surgery and chemo, my grandmother also never smoked and had her brain rot due to alzheimers... hell, my grandmother tried to eat a candle at thanksgiving once.

When yur old, eventually something incredibly unpleasant is going to happen... ill be more than happy to justify that unpleasantry by doing something i enjoyed my whole life. Rather than live a healthy life of strict guidelines, and end up eating candles and not knowing the names of my own children.

Now that Disposable E-Cigarettes are commonly found in Gas Stations and are like $10 and last as long as 2+ packs of cigarettes, there's no reason not to quit smoking. You can get your nicotine rush without destroying your health, smelling like an ash tray, littering the streets with cigarette butts, having to go outside to smoke, polluting the air and making the area around you smell sh*tty for whoever is around you, and supporting the greedy big-wigs that own the unethical tobacco companies. And on top of that, you're actually saving money in the long run.

Smoking this right now actually. Feels good to have my nicotine and not to be destroying my lungs. :)

actually curious if e-cigarttes have gotten better i think i bought a janty stick several years ago and it was absolute garbage.... just nicotine liquid dripping everywhere, and when i did get it a puff it was mostly burnt tasting.

although ill admit, i wasnt a real avid smoker... and that nicotine totally blasted the system.

This disposable "FIN" brand one I'm smoking right now isn't bad at all. I haven't had any problem with nicotine liquid dripping anywhere or anything like that, it's worked perfectly. These disposable ones feel a lot more solid than the rechargable ones(no moving parts or anything like that). And although the "tobacco" flavored ones still don't taste quite like real tobacco, they're not nearly as bad as they used to be. The menthol ones aren't bad at all(since they use real menthol, not an emulated flavor like the tobacco flavored ones) And you just toss it in the trash once it's done and buy a new one. No messing with batteries or anything, it's really simple. It's ready to smoke right out of the package.

I dont think any of them have moving parts, and theoretically a reusable atomizer/system should be better than a disposable one (as they are much more expensive)... the disposable stuff used to be real crap.

maybe its all better... but if yur saying the disposable stuff, which is usually crap, is good.... im gonna have a few salt grains with that advice good sir :P
