I just heard the shocking news yesterday that one of my friends died early yesturday morning. The cause of death is unknown but it may have been due to the fact that he had a history of epilepsy and since he was living by himself and if he did have a case of epilepsy no one was around to help him.

Anyways, Iwas playing a soccer game with this guy JUST last saturday. Him dying is truly shocking especially considering he is only 19-21 years old. That's way too young to die. This feels like some really, really bad dream and I am just writing this on a Gamespot forum...in my dream. I am afraid this is not. It's reality.

But this does bring up a question...are you afraid of death? Do you think about death and what will happen to you when you die? Do you believe in an afterlife?

I think often times humans get caught up with this life without a day thinking about death or what will happen when you die. That is until someone close to them or someone they know dies.

I am not afraid of death, I know that eventually I will die and by being afraid of it won't prevent it.

I'm a lot more afraid of there being nothing after death than what awaits if there is.

I wouldn't say I'm afraid of death no, as mentioned above it's going to happen eventually and there's not much you can do about it. Do I want to? No of course not haha. Once I'm dead, I'm dead with nothing else happening. The act of dying however, I hope comes swiftly and not dragged out in pain..

Nope, I don't believe anything happens after death so it doesn't bother me. I wasn't bothered before I was born so I won't exactly be bothered after I die.

I am a deist, which means I don't believe in an afterlife. I believe that one you die you simply cease to exist, in the same way as you never existed until you were conceived. I am afraid of dying sure, but I know that after I die I won't know about it.

Right now, no I'm not afraid of death or what happens after it if anything. Of course, I haven't been in a situation where I was facing death so it's hard to say if I would be. I think about dying often. Usually by my own hand and no, I don't believe in an afterlife.

Thats true, and I do hope an afterlife does exist. But right now, I am leaning more towards the "doesn't exist" side. I should have worded that better, apologies.

Having been in a situation when my lifespan was in danger of being cut unfourtunatly short I can honestly say yes im rather afraid of the idea. I didnt use to be that way but if i go id rather not have the time to comprehend or think about it unless i am truly ready and feel fufilled with what ive done in this life.

I have said it before a few time on this forum and to some people through PM's.

I am not partiicularly afraid of death in and of itself in relation to only me.

That does not mean i want to die, in any hurry to die, or allow someone to just simply kill me.

There are things in life that i still would like to do and experience before it comes to end.

I do believe in afterlife, but of which nature it could be i am not certain, nor pretend to think i know what the afterlife could be like. but the concept of the afterlife i do beleive in.

I am simply put.

indifferent.

Be it Heaven, Hell, The Hindu wheel of reincarnation, or simply Oblivion. don't know for certain.

I am certain we will all find out for ourselves when we finally make that transition from life to death.

Yeah i really enjoy living as human. Reincarnating as an alien on the edge of galaxy would suck. Though i am sure that was exactly the same thing i said in my previous live. imagining how would i live being a extraterestrial while being born with no memories of past.

I'm curious, does everyone here believe in an afterlife or something? It seems like some of you only fear death because of possible pain... I for one do not believe in an afterlife, and I'm afraid of death because at least imo it would involve eternal sleep. But with no dreams, nothing at all but darkness. :(

Death happens to everyone I have no fear of it. I've been close several times in my life. I over dosed on drugs twice I've been shot at with bullets wizzing by my head and I've been in two car accidents I was lucky to walk away from. Your not truelyalive unless your walking on the edge.

Yes, I do. I do believe I will be held accountable for my actions, by God. Let's put it this way there are people who in this world who commit murder and absolute henious crimes and get away with it. Do you think the cops can capture all the criminals and murders in this world? Certainly not.

Who will hold those people accountable for their actions if they get away with it. The only answer to me is God.

If you look at Hitler him killing himself doesn't in my opinion doesn't bring justice to millions of his victims. Only justice for me would have to be him rotting in hell for like....forever.

Not only that...how about all his minions and cronies in the Nazi party? Do you think all of them were tried for contributing to the death of millions of people.

As long as it's sometime far off in the unknowable future I'm not afraid of it. If I got shot through the chest and had a bit of time to think "Holy s***, I'm gonna die!" then yeah, that would definitely change my opinion on it.

I'm not afraid of what will happen after I die because I'll be dead. I'll just rot away in my grave or maybe my family will have them run me through a furnace. Kind of hoping for a peaceful casket actually, but if the kids wanna save some money, well, what the heck. Not like I'm gonna feel it.

I'm an atheist and I don't believe in a afterlife. And in some situations I am scared of death and and other times I'm not, it all depends on the diease, etc. Right now, my uncle has stage 4 cancer and just by looking at him you can tell he is dying. Just right there is scary being in pain, and slowly dying is scary but having a heart attack etc is painless and quick compared to cancer. So I would rather die from something that is quick and painless then something that drags. I also was juat thinking about death and if I was in the military stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and the probability of death there doesn't scare me but thinking about cancer does.

Im agnostic so I belive that human reason is incapable of providing sufficient rational grounds to justify knowledge whether God exists or does not. I do not believe any deity exists, but do not deny it as a possibility. The same goes for the afterlife.

Exactly this. When you're asleep you don't think oh I'm sleeping now and count down till you wake up; same as when you're dead it's not 'oh im dead, now I have nothing to do/see/feel/touch for eternity.

I ask, why do they need to be held accountable (after death)? What happens to the other animals that kill others of their own kind. It really is no different, we're not that special. If a person murders and gets the death penalty, is the fact they no longer exist not good enough?

The idea of judgement and 'justice' for something wrong is a very human concept. As I mentioned with comparisson to the other animals that kill their own kind.

Yes and no. I've come to terms with death, if that's what's you're asking. I don't worry about death, I don't really fear it, and I fully comprehend the implications of the fact that it can come at any time. I do, however, think that there is always some degree of fear that everyone has that never really goes away. It is completely unknown and simultaneously inevitable, and I don't think anyone can truly get over that.

As for what I believe happens, nothing. I don't believe in gods or an afterlife, once you die your brain stops working and you cease to be.

You're saying God is nothing more than a Warden of Justice? If that's true we are probably all f*cked. People write laws into the books, "we" punish people for crimes based on mans laws. Why would God care about what you, or I, or anyone "claims" as justice?

As a matter of fact men make laws and then say they are from the mouth of God( which would be blasphemy). If there is a God he/she/it decides what justice is all we get to do is agree or disagree.

not really. in a situation of peril, I would fear for my life, which is natural. if we didn't fear death in that sense, we wouldn't care about crossing a busy street without looking or playing Russian roulette.

but I don't dwell on my mortality, fearing the day I die. death will come when it comes, and there's no sense worrying about it until then (unless youre really old.. then you should write a will. then you can stop worrying)

as for what happens after death, I don't think about it at all; I prefer it remains a surprise.

I find it most unfortunate that the time I have alive is minuscule compared to the existence of everything, and what will become; but at the end of the day, I think despite the violence, aggression, governments etc... I'm happy with the time period that I am alive in.

No, I do not believe in souls, afterlives or anything of the sort.

Sorry about your friend, it's always sad when someone so young dies. Sometimes the thought of death scares me, but I try not to think about it too much. I'm not religious and I'm pretty certain nothing happens after death, which is both a good and bad thing. It's a nice thought that when you die you're reunited with your friends and family can live on in the after life happily forever, but seriously, what are the chances of that?

See the problem with that argument is that Hitler's death = the mass murder that he committed. That can't be equivalent. Hence the believe that he will be punished in the afterlife.

Nope, it really dosn't bother me. In fact it's somewhat comforting that eventually it'll all end.

Nope. I like that it's one of the things I can be certain will happen and whatever will be will be.

Death? No. Dying? Of course, although recent revelations showing the release of DMT during those final moments should mean it's quite the tripper.

As for death itself, well I guess my soul will retreat back unto the ether, readied for my next incarnation whoever that may be.

Or at least, that would be nice.

See the problem with that argument is that Hitler's death = the mass murder that he committed. That can't be equivalent. Hence the believe that he will be punished in the afterlife.

Well I never said it was equivalent, but does it need to be an eye for an eye? The sheer fact that he's dead and couldn't kill anyone else is fine for me. Is it unfortunate that so many people died? yes of course. Is it different to, say, a fish going around and killing/eating tons of other fish, who then dies (which I assume no one believe needs to be held accountable)? No.

Can't say I believe in after life. Not sure if I'm afraid, since I've never faced death.
