Essentially. The only thing that technically keeps my girlfriend and I from being married is the fact we don't have a certificate saying we are. I've been living with her for well over a year now, and despite the ups and downs, it has been a largely positive thing in my life.foxhound_foxEssentially though isn't that what marriage is? Are you planning on making it legal? Oddly the statistics tend to say that those that live together before marriage have a higher instance of divorce than those not doing so.

lack of non-digitalized lover i'm guessingEssentially though isn't that what marriage is? Are you planning on making it legal? All the paper gives the couple is certain legal and financial benefits that help the children. You want to know why people who live together before getting married have a higher instance of splitting up? Because they have higher standards and don't force themselves into a relationship that isn't working solely to keep the marriage together. Leaving a bad relationship is a good thing. It benefits both partners and any children. I've found that living with my girlfriend has brought me back down to earth in terms of expectations in a relationship, and totally destroyed any kind of idealism I ever had about a relationship or marriage. It allows me to have reasonable expectations for my girlfriend and I hope the same for her of me. We do eventually plan on making it legal (probably going common law before the end of the year) but not for some time, and not until we have the financial means to not only pay for a good wedding, but be able to support children we would want as a result of that marriage.
I'm married and happy because he's pretty much the best friend I've ever had.
Some of my friends have been really really terrible relationships and gotten married just because they thought "it was time." You can date someone absolutely terrible for you for 20 years and it would still be a bad decision to marry.

Well yes that's true. On the other hand there is some tax benefits etc to being married as opposed to not. For instance...health decisions as well.[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Essentially. I wasn't asking why. And the fact of the matter is that the couple in question decides they want to make it legal since it's working out for them and they feel that person is who they want to spend time with. I'm not sure why you surmised they are forced to marry. Anyway I'd imagine the reason they end up divorced in a higher percentage than those not living together is the expectations of the relationship have changed. And since they've been living together for some time....they probably just do what they always did. And with the changed expectations that doesn't work anymore. It's harder to expect your partner to "act" a specific way when they're free and clear....but different when they've become a "unit".

Ohhhh polygamy, now there's an idea!
Its just like monopoly but with more hotels and more going to jail.
But less money....>__>I have no intention of getting married in my 20's. Can't see how people do it. Seems like you'd miss out on your own life going from living with you parents to living with a spouse and having kids in a matter of a few years.

I'd have to meet someone capable of tolerating me, so far that hasn't happened. At this rate I'm doomed to be forever alone.Bloodaxe726
