Yes, and so is everyone else. The planet would not work if every species was not inherently selfish. It could be argued that self-sacrifice to protect others is itself selfish (because the martyr is sacrificing themselves for their cause/their children/their species/etc.).
Listen to the expert, Gordon Gekko:

The Wall Street Journal once published an article arguing that selfishness and greed were more productive than kindness and generosity. Their argument was to accumulate as much wealth as possible, then set up a charitable foundation upon death which distributes funds to worthy causes.
