I was browsing the front page of Reddit and stumbled across this article written by a professor from Syracuse University.

Racist or Not? Arizona State University Students Wear Black Face to Football Game Arizona, a state that is regularly accused of having a serious issue with people of color, received another stain to its reputation. This week, four white female students at Arizona State University showed up to a football gamewearing black face. The school asked students to wear all-black attire to celebrate the new uniforms in their game against the Missouri Tigers. This is when a few students took it too far. The game was televised on ESPN, so the entire world saw the action go down both on and off the field. Thousands of people have expressed their anger at the students for their insensitivity. But while many were outraged, some found no reason to be offended. One has to laugh at the irony that a school with students showing up to a game in black face also happens to be highly dependent upon African Americans to run and jump, thus bringing millions to the university in revenue each year. The idea of black men working up a sweat for white folks in the stands wearing black face is beyond disturbing.

What does OT think? Was it racist for these students to paint themselves black at a blackout game where the home team unveiled their new black uniforms? As a student at Arizona State, I'm definitely a little offended -- not by the actions of the students, but by the words of the professor who wrote this article. It seems to me that Dr. Watkins doesn't really understand the concept of school spirit. If a Redskins fan paints their body red, is that racist against Native Americans? If a Lakers fan paints their body yellow, is that racist against Asians? I mean, where does it stop? Are we forgetting that the current generation is largely devoid of racial discrimination? In fact, I'm almost willing to bet that the four students highlighted in the article don't even know what blackface is. They probably just thought they were going above and beyond in showing their support for ASU at the blackout game. Also, it's probably worth noting that, while the professor ironically goes on to state that the black men are hard at work on the field, Arizona State's top two football players are white.

So they painted their faces with the new school colors? Although I understand why blackface is offensive, that's not really what the students were doing.

Well, this is the same guy who said that Lil Wayne was an enemy to the black community and that BET has a similar agenda to the KKK.

I just looked closer and it turns out that. . . . . . one of the "four white female students" is actually black. Third from the left.

I agree that this isn't racist at all but I gotta put a stop to this here since I have seen people do this all the time and it kinda bothers me.

Just because of a person of a given race it's doing something that is deemed racist to that particular race doesn't mean it isn't racist, there ARE people out there who racist against their own race, your picture isn't proof of anything...

WHAT? This is silly talk. Racist against their own race? She is wearing her school colors. Proves this isn't racist in the least. Why would a black person black face? This logic is not sound.

There are people out there who hates their own race/skin color. The fact that this is beyond your grasp astound me, case in point, see: Sammy Sosa and Michael Jackson.

If you agree it isn't racist, why do you then change your point to say that she's doing something racist? For the record, the only thing I was out to prove with that picture is that it was four stupid white white girls, like the author of the article states.

I didn't change my point... there isn't any thing racist in that picture but it is not true that just because a black person do something racist, doesn't makes it NOT racist. I'd refer you to the 2000's movie Bamboozled but I don't like Spike Lee and I don't want him to be more popular.

He/she never said that it was racist, simply that it still bothers him/her and that just because someone of a specific race is involved in an act that could be considered racist against their own demographic doesn't mean that it's automatically not racistbecause some people, in fact,do look down on their own race and so are reverse racists.

This is the same as painting your face any other color in support of your team. I've seen people paint their whole bodies the color of their favorite hockey teams. This team happens to be the color black. If it was blue, would it be racist? I don't think so. It's not blackface, it has nothing to do with black people.

It was implied from my point, but if it wasn't, then I'm sorry for thr misunderstanding still having said that you really should be more clear with your posts, specially when it comes to such loaded issues such as racism Also I will not retract my statements since people really need to stop with whole "it's not racists, a black person did it too" mentality.

Being black myself, if they were wearing school colors and not making fun of black people it isn't bad. That said they should have worn the other school color to balance it out.

The school's colors are maroon and gold, but over the summer, the athletic department bought new uniforms. The specialty uniforms are all black and this game was the first time they were worn by the football team, hence the blackout.

That might be ill advised because race is a touchy subject as evident by this Professors editorial, but I don't think this is racist. You want to see the more offensive blackface, just do a search for it, I'm sure you can see the difference. Look at Ted Danson's mind numbingly stupid blackface stunt at Whoopi Goldbergs Friars roast...that right there goes way further then this picture could ever dare dream of going!

I must say I don't really care. For all we know racism never entered any of those girls minds and they just were playing dress up for blackout night.

If I'm wrong and they all just wanted to be racist I suppose it's not really a racist enough act for me to actually worry about. Kind like if someone were to flip me off in traffic. Sure I'll be offended, but it's not ultimately bad enough for me to do anything about it.

That's really damn silly to call that "racist". I highly doubt they went into the game consciously thinking "I disrespect black people so I will paint my face black". Perhaps you could make an argument for it "looking bad", but if that's the case, it's not their fault.

No, because people associate black paint on someones face with racism. Therefore, "looks bad" to outsiders because they assume they are racists.

What next, the special forces called racist for wearing black facepaint ? It's not racist, and although it seems a little odd, the girls obviously had no intent to offend. It's actually a shame, something like this could happen, with a black girl included. And none of them even think of any racial issues, it's a sign that times are changing. If some PC nuts hadn't jumped on this it might have actually been an example of racism disappearing from society.......but no, someone had to bring it back up cause they can't let the issue disappear. In fact, I found that the most racist thing in all of this, was that article.
