Info about the work and the artist: http://www.4wfilm.org/2012/10/shirin-neshat-turbulent/ "In Turbulent, Shirin Neshat 1998 two-screen video installation, two singers (Shoja Azari playing the role of the male and Iranian Vocalist and composer Sussan Deyhim as the female) create a powerful musical metaphor for the complexity of gender roles and cultural power within the framework of ancient Persian music and poetry." What do you think of this work? Do you think that it works in conveying what the artist is trying to show? Why or why not? What works and what doesn't? Also keep in mind that the work when in a gallery is usually presented as two videos playing together on opposite sides of the room. This thread is meant to serve as a discussion of the piece and a conversation with your fellow users about the various aspects of it. Discuss.

my observations

  • the man who is singing has a full audience. the woman who is singing does not. i wonder why this is?
  • the stage with the man is fully lit. the stage with the woman is not fully lit and is dark. i wonder why this is?
  • the woman screams when she sings. the man sings calmly. i wonder why this is?
