My second cousin, who i thought was always cool in childhood is now becoming a evangelical christian. He is studying to be one in college ever since he went to rehab for being a drunk.

But i like to drink myself, and im a pretty fierce atheist. I want to be buddy with him but Im not sure because our lives have taken different paths now. I havent heard from him in years but my family is pressuring me to hang with him now that he is going to college near me. Should I call him up?

What would you do?

Go for it. I'm a pretty heavy christian myself, but that doesnt stop me from hanging out with atheist.

Heck my best friend is Muslim.

We just stray from religious discussion.

Hang out if he is as cool dude. Religion should be secondary in life and the person themself should always come first.

No as an athiest your mission in life is to kill all believers. You should have read that in chapter 3 of the handbook.

If you can keep your tounge in your mouth when it comes to religion, and he can do the same, what's the problem?

thats what im afraid of, i'll probably do it though b/c im not sure i have anything to lose but maybe he would via loss of fantasy so i would feel bad if it came to that situation. I know i have another cousin who was much closer but put a little riff in between us ever since we argued about religion (though i pwned him i feel bad for shattering illusions so i dunno if should do it again).

Why are you even considering this?

Bro, if being an atheist is going to come between you and the people you love, you better find a different belief system.

I see no harm in hanging with him. Just avoid the topic of religion, and avoid arguments should the topic arise.

If you were ever a true friend in the first place you would stick by him regardless of his beliefs. Most athiests I know have no problem with being friends with a religious person.

Congratulations. Your last few sentences explained your problem.

I don't even know you, but from three or four sentences you already sound like someone I wouldn't want to talk to for any extended period of time.

Leave people's beliefs alone. Eventually, anyone will be OK with you, because you won't lash out at them. Leave things alone.

I'm not seriously suggesting he should change his beliefs, but if it's creating friction between him and his loved ones he needs to reexamine them. I've no problem with him being an atheist, but cutting ties because people think differently is sickening.

Something tells me that argument didn't so much end in an "pwning" as a useless deadlock that wound up hurting everyone and helping nothing.

TO why are you even considering this? If this individual is your friend then his or your belief systems should not get in the way of your friendship. Heck, my two closest friends are non religious ( one's a Atheist the other is agnostic). If you can not debate about religion without harming someone's or your feelings then just avoid it.

Why not? He is family. Who cares what you believe in or what he believes in. You should respect each other for what they believe and just be with them because they are family. Beliefs are personal and should not be imposed upon others.

You do not get the joke? See, Cloud_S was trying to make Atheism seem like that Atheists have standards or beliefs that all Atheists follow but the defintion of Athiesm is that they do not have any common beliefs or codes to follow and the beliefs of an Atheist vary. Except for the belief that God(s) do not exist. See, he tried to make Atheism seem like it has its own belief systems or codes to follow and I just went along with it.

Long story short, it was a joke

Might as well try, he might end up being an ok guy. If not, it's not as though you lost something, as you never really knew him to begin with.

Sure, I go to church weekly, makes my wife happy, but I am not changing my mind, have learned a thing or two, you may teach him something.

My family couldn't be more spread out as far as religion. I still chill with all my extended family regardless of our beliefs.
