In my opinion (of course), I find the Asian girls that people are drooling over in some forums not that appealing, but I would highly consider dating some of the Asian girls that I know and have met (in fact, I'd even say preference).

Personally I don't prefer a specific race over the other (I'm Asian btw and most of the Asian girls at my old high school are NOT cute, hot or attractive one bit!)

Partly it'll be because of anime and video games. Though i think it's mostly down to the fact that they tend to be portayed as more feminine and more innocent, you've got to consider that usually they are seen via images so the photography plays a large part. Try turning off safe search and googling Lady Gaga or Britney then Aika Mitsui or Ai Takahashi, though they are both major pop stars there's a distinc differance in the images.
