as many of you may have been cognizant of, recently there was a leviathan tornado in Oklahoma. While CNN was examining the story, they interviewed an atheist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIDrmYyfWe8. Wolf Blitzer, the reporter for CNN, made the assumption that the woman was religious. While this may seem like a small incident, it is a minute reflection of what atheists have to go through on a pleonastic basis. for example, young atheists are forced to say the pledge of allegiance everyday in school, which contains religious references. so, in your opinion, do atheists suffer from widespread discrimination and persecution in the United States?

Why not? are you an atheist yourself? Upon "coming out" with my atheism, i felt discriminated and persecuted by many of my classmates in high school. They did not treat me like a fellow human being anymore and teased me.

just nod your head politely and let them believe in whichever superfriend they are into.

i have no clue what the point is of trying to have a logical conversation with someone who flatout believes that magic is real and that with absolutely zero evidence that anything supernatural has ever occurred in the entirety  of recorded history believes deeply that the entire universe is a 100%  supernatural occurrence.

In california at least you do not have to actually say the pledge.  I abstained.

I agree completely. sad in this modern age where science dictates everything that goes on in this world that we have people that believe in Jesus, Mohammed, and Buddha. while the majority can remain in ignorance, we all know that atheists are the ones making progress in this world (mark zuckerberg, bill gates, thousands of scientists, richard dawkins, etc.)

i'm also saying don't rub their noses in it.

there is a part of the brain that evolved to have the religious experience so obviously it has some kind of survival benefit.

i can't blame people for being the organisms that they are and see no sense in trying to fight biology.

There was already a thread on this.  Anyway, Blitzer asks weird questions, and though this wasn't really anything more than awkward, a lot of the God squad hates atheists for being different.  I suppose it varies on a region-to-region basis.

I came out and told all my friends. Rumors started to go around the school. Also my teachers discriminated me. For example, certain teachers graded the papers of religious Christians easier than they did for those that were of different beliefs, like the atheists or muslims.

right, but disproves your claim that most are atheists.  And I have a feeling many hardcore atheists would even think deists are morons for believing in a higher power

religion has caused more destruction in the history of mankind than any other force. it has caused children to die, women to be raped and slaughtered, and gays to be made fun of and beat up. religion needs to be eliminated from the world to fully progress humanity.

i, unlike you, understand that religion has caused more pain and suffering. it is almost like an addictive substance such as crack-cocaine. when you have religion running a country, it's almost like mob mentality. anyone that does not conform is a seen as a sinner and is thus persecuted. the elimination of religion in society means that the country will be safer, more fair place where there is a lower chance of discrimination and persecution occuring.

[QUOTE="lostrib"]

[QUOTE="liberalus"] i, unlike you, understand that religion has caused more pain and suffering. it is almost like an addictive substance such as crack-cocaine. when you have religion running a country, it's almost like mob mentality. anyone that does not conform is a seen as a sinner and is thus persecuted. the elimination of religion in society means that the country will be safer, more fair place where there is a lower chance of discrimination and persecution occuring. liberalus

Oh i understand, but your answer is basically do the same thing you claim region has been doing.  You just want to be the one doing the discriminating and persecuting.

i don't have a problem persecuting racists and bigots that hate gays, transexuals, lesbians, and other people

Oh so now people can only have the beliefs you find acceptable.  This sounds like a very free society

I'm not sure who has the biggest persecution complex, the religious right that thinks the gays and atheists are taking the country from them or the atheist that thinks that nativity scenes and the pledge of alligience are oppressive.
