I don't see the issue. The majority within the US are religious and the largest part is Christians so therefor it is the logical conclusion that the majority you meet are Christians, something the reporter did but it turned out she was an Atheist. She mentioned it and all was fine despite the revelation. So based on the youtube video and that knowledge then I don't see the particular issue. Granted I am aware that Atheists are about as trusted as rapists in the US and there is discrimination because of it, which is a shame and something to fight back at without going down to their level. Just keep your chin up.
i wouldn't say suffer... but it's there. i would say theists and atheist probably share the same opinion of each other and we are all equally looked down upon by the other. a couple days ago i was at my daughters school for kindergarten graduation. i overheard a conversation with her friends where she used the term "oh my god" and they proceeded to tell her that what she did was wrong and she was disrespecting god... this conversation didn't sit well with me.
