Just wondering what people's views are on the excistence of a god. Personally, I don't believe in God and can't comprehend why people believe it, but I'm here to see everyones opinion.

My opinion is that idiots like you should stop making atheism & religion threads on here. By far the most overplayed topic. Go to /r/atheism if you want to feel good and superior and have a circlejerk with your liberal, atheist, politically correct friends.mingmao3046This pretty much sums everything up. This thread will get no where,
"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
This is why I believe in God. A lot of people here won't understand this and may try to start an argument over it, but this passage brings tears to my eyes. The message is for all people. Not just those who choose to believe; but everyone. You will be saved from suffering, anger, and hate. All of us will be saved. He was sent just to save and spread a message of love and peace to us, who don't even deserve to be saved; but God loves all of us that much.
After seeing many of the intricacies of the universe, I can't comprehend why anyone wouldn't believe in God.

I would not say that atheism and politically correct are at all related. In any event, I don't know that OP is making this thread to feel "good and superior." Having said that, it is still dumb since we've probably had this same exact thread 5 times in the past month. Seriously, I am all for debates, but we don't need this many of the same one in such a short period of time.

After seeing many of the intricacies of the universe, I can't comprehend why anyone wouldn't believe in God.harashawnThat might have flown two millennia ago (hell, it probably spawned religion altogether), but now that we have a decent understanding of how the universe around us actually functions, I can't comprehend why anyone would deny credit to nature and physics and instead heap praise on some wizard in the sky.
I believe in God, the true God of Abraham that has no image or man made idol. This is the only God there is, and God is all powerful and good. I follow Judaism, but I believe all the 3 major Abrahamic faiths have merit (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).
Those who do not follow the God of Abraham are still loved by God and God will not hold that against them,
It doesn't matter if you are an atheist or not, you have to get right with God. End of story. If you are a good person and follow the Noahide laws, which are written on your soul (it's your consciounce), then God will judge you justly.
The day will come when the Messiah walks the world and the dead are resurrected, and all men will know the one true God and will be judged. And then Olam Haba will happen and peace will be eternal.
Give me orthodoxy or give me death.

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, Collassians 1:15
I suppose I'm theist.
Don't get me wrong, you can't rationalize religion at all but you need to be in a certain state where you can be faithful. You either have it or you don't. It really depends on how your view on life is; if you're cynical then any type of beauty that religion holds is wasted on you and it doesn't wince at you rejecting it if you do.
I'd like to think I have that type of faith, but if other people don't, oh well. Nothing you can really do.

There very probably is no such thing as God. The existence of God never made any sense to me. I will never accept the existence of a loving God as long as there is people terribly suffering, dying or starving in this world.
If there was a God then there wouldn't be people in terrible suffering and dying every day with no purpose at all and everything would be much better than it is now.

While I do consider Christianity as one of the Religions that has merit, I do not see Christ as the Messiah. In my views it is wrong to worship a man, a man cannot be God and God has no physical idol or form. Also the world is still broken, if Jesus was the Messiah then why is the world not yet fixed? Why are the dead not resurrected?
This is just how I see things based off of my understanding. I do like to learn about Christianity though and Jesus was ahead of his time. Maybe he was inspired by God, but he was not God nor was he the Messiah. At least according to my understanding.
The only Messiah prophecy that Jesus fulfilled was he rode into Israel on a donkey.

Not really. There very well could be a God that is indifferent.

Well man isn't God, his divinity is not his humanity. So the divinity and the humanity are distinct within the one person which is Christ. As for why the world is not fixed, thats because God has not deemed it the time to be fixed, thats all there is to it. But the historical Christ claimed to be the messiah and if you don't accept that of him you can't really say he was inspired by God then.

No I don't buy it. An indifferent God is not really a God in my book.

God does help, just in different ways. See it's about faith, if God just came down and shouted out your name to you and fixed all your problems instantly then you would only worship God because you knew God existed. However this is not what God wants, God wants people to legitimently love Him, and will put their faith in Him.
If God revealed himself directly like some atheists want then people would not be legit, they would only do good things and serve God because they know he is real and would be afraid of the consequences.
The way things work now, God can see who truly loves Him and who doesn't. God does help, trust me, just in different ways, the saying "God works in mysterious ways" is very true.

Assuming this entity is eternal and before the universe, it seems unlikely that this indifferent deity would even create the world in the first place.

Jesus did some really great things and his teachings are very inspirational. But with the Jewish view he didn't fulfill our prophecies and many of the things that the Bible says about Jesus is contradictory to our teachings (born from a Virgin, claiming to be God in the flesh, orginal sin etc....).
In our view, the Messiah will be an ordinary human but one with a direct mission and relationship with God. The messiah will be from the blood line of David and will resurrect the dead, rebuild the temple, bring the face of God directly to humans, and usher in Olam Haba (The World to Come) basically world peace and eternal life for those who were good.
It should be "Theism or atheism?", because only theism is the opposite of atheism.ghoklebutter+1 I am what I am because I spent several years of my life studying religion. I find it almost laughable that people believe in a God, an afterlife and other supernatural things (however, I accept the possibly of *preternatural* things). And on top of that, fight wars, kill family and friends, commit horrible acts against others... solely for a spiritual pipedream. But then again, I understand the vicious nature of the human animal, and recognize why so many do believe such things.

Assuming such a being exists, how could you possibly know what its intentions are, thereby allowing you to reason that it's 'unlikely' that it'd create the universe while still remaining apathetic to human endeavors?[QUOTE="ghoklebutter"]It should be "Theism or atheism?", because only theism is the opposite of atheism.Zeviander+1 I am what I am because I spent several years of my life studying religion. That's funny because I find it laughable that people don't believe in God or an after life, or judgment for thier actions. Atheism makes no logical sense, it's believing that nothing started the universe, that everything came out of nothing.
It would be like looking at a car and not believing it had an engineer behind it's design, it's completely illogical and I find it histarical.

But scientists aren't saying that everything originated out of nothing. What they are saying is that everything started with the Big Bang.
Also take a look at the book A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather than Nothing
Also empty space isn't nothing. Nothing as complete absense of anything has never been observed in science. Take a lot at that video:

Whatever drives you, honestly. I understand how religion has lead to both positive and negative side effects, which could start an entire new topic altogether that I really don't care to get into, but taking that out of the equation, believe in (or don't) whatever it is that gives you a greater sense of being, living, purpose, etc.
Personally, I'm not religious, and I haven't been since my parents would drag me to church as a kid. Even to the sense of debunking it (atheism), that plays such an insignificant role in my life. I really don't spend much time at all nowadays thinking about the existence of God or not.

I know about science, believe me. I have no problem with Evolution or the Big Bang Theory, I belive in them.
However you are not looking at the big picture, see where did the Big Bang come from? How did it start? What put the necessary elements there? Where did these elements come from to begin with? Why do they exist? How did the process of evolution start? As in what made it? Where did it come from?
You see in the end it all points back at a higher power. One can believe in God and science btw, they are not enemies at all. I am religious and I like science.
