Atheists do you believe in a afterlife? Im pretty sure you can be an atheist and still believe in a afterlife.

To me they cant explain how life began and so we know just about as much about the afterlife as we do to the meaning of why life exists. Thats why I believe in an afterlife.

No, I don't believe in an afterlife. And I really don't understand your reasoning as to why you believe in an afterlife. You're claiming that because we currently don't understand how life originated that justifies a belief in an afterlife? How exactly are the two related? I really don't understand how you get from one to the other.

An atheist believing in the afterlife makes even less sense as a Christian who does not believe in an afterlife. That said, I as a Christian believe in the physical resurrection of the dead.

You have to analyze what definition of life we are talking about. I'm referring to simply 'being'. When you cease to exist, space and time become undefined... or at least that's what I believe. Space and time are relative to the observer. One theory I have is that all 'being' is actually one. You are alive in everything, separated by channels like the human body and brain. When you die, your channel dies, but your being continues to live life through everything, everywhere. It's a hard concept to explain.

I do not. I find the idea quite ridiculous. If we live our lives thinking "this is the only one we get" we will be far more willing to get the most out of this one, and strive for excellence here, than "just wait" for something we trust to be "better" after we die, knowing full well that there is a great possibility that there is nothing after death. I'm not what you would call a typical atheist though. Not only do I study religion quite extensively, but I am religious myself. However, I find the concept of "blind faith" quite laughable, and don't understand how anyone can actually let themselves fall for it without questioning it, or seeking the experiences for themselves. What I've been reading about early Judaism, Christianity and Islam makes me think that those religions died a few hundred years ago, and were replaced with something that really shouldn't even be called "religion." There is no apophacy our compassion anymore. Its all emotional, loud, personal and downright selfish ("I'm going to heaven but gays and sinners aren't, haha!").

That's actually a rather interesting view. Doesn't that someone conflict with the Bible though? I'm not an atheist but I don't really believe in an "active" god. I do think reincarnation exists though.

Please. Mindstorm's probably the easiest person to get along with when it comes to religious debates and I don't even share his views.

this is exactly my thought as well. Someone that does not believe in an afterlife is, in short, better motivated to be a better person.

Some Christian friends of mine asked me "How can you be a good person if you dont believe in an afterlife? If you dont, then you do not believe in consequences for your actions, therefore youre free to do whatever you wish, good or bad"

My response was that humanity is good at its core, there is no "original sin", we are good people to eachother and to ourselves billions of times a day, day after day.

Being good solely out of fear that you will get punished after you dieis not genuinely good. It is quite the opposite imo. Faith in the supernatural afterlife is a crutch for a wounded soul. Living a good life because it is what you strive for naturally is a truly healthy soul.

I'd say only a literal interpretation. If the idea of "death and resurrection" is taken figuratively (where literally it defies logic and the laws of nature), if "death" is the death of the ego or "I" in the psyche, then the "resurrection" becomes the "raising" of the unified consciousness (that inspires complete selflessness and compassion), or "One" that people identify the experience of as "God," "Supreme Reality," "Nirvana," etc. then the whole Bible becomes a handbook on how to access this "divine oneness" and once it is unlocked, how to apply it to daily life (the archetype of Jesus). These kinds of things to do with religion is why I refuse to be a staunch objectivist, and why I love religion and its study so much.

You just got some major brownie points in my books. I thinking more that Mindstorm is a pastor (or some sort of religious leader, if I'm not mistaken which I may be in which case just ignore this) and that generally pastors, fathers, priests or whatever you want to call them tend to be fairly literal with the bible and as such I found it odd that he would say that. Not in a negative way of course. Mindstorm is probably my favourite "practicing" Christian here as I think he shows the values of the religion admirably.

No. I think the whole idea of it is a bit greedy. Plus there are waaaaayyy too many exceptions etc. to have any sort of heaven/hell reward system.. Like how is it even possible to judge were someone would go. What if they are mentaly challenged and do something terrible?..... What about people born into certain situations.. like Nazi's... I mean we think of them as the worst most absolute evil but truth is if we were born in German in the 20's or 30's odds are we would have been Nazi's as well. We are taught our morals and codes of ethics by the people around us so how is it all fair for the people who are born around people with "evil" ethics... if such a thing even exists...

Don't know. At this point in my life I really shouldn't be wasting my time worrying about what happens when I die and instead worry about living my life. Ask me again in 20 years.

Why die if there's an afterlife? Did god know that the world would get overpopulated and put a time limit on our souls, why not make us eternal? Highly doubt it. Afterlife doesn't make sense, neither does reincarnation, for the very same reason. It would mean every soul on this earth would have an afterlife, flies, ants, cats. They all have a body and brains, yet they are never included. We just happen to be humans by coincidence, we are no different from any other living organism, we are just smarter.
