[QUOTE="Blood-Scribe"]Why in the hell do people still use Pascal's Wager?Tylendal
Because arguments for religion that even seem to hold the slightest lick of truth are a very finite resource. Science keeps answering more and more questions, but religious teachings are static.

There's still way better arguments for any religion or a specific one out there that you could use instead. I don't get how anyone can resort to this horrible argument.

First off, I don't believe that any religion is right so I don't have any fear about eternal damnation. Second, on the SAT you lose points for getting questions wrong but don't lose points for leaving it blank. You are better off leaving it blank because you are probably going to get it wrong if you guess.

No. If there is a god and i end up in hell, I'll just take it like a man and accept I was wrong, and do better next time. But that won't happen.

TC, that's Pascal's Wager. Alright fine, and while we're at it, start following Islam because they might be right, or Voodoo, or Buddhism, or one of the other many thousand religions in the world.

[QUOTE="-Big_Red-"]You cannot fault me for trying. Yeah I failed. But damnit I tried.GabuEx

You could try convincing people that there is an actual reason to believe in something. :P Pascal's Wager is nothing more than one big appeal to fear logical fallacy.

I'm not trying to use Pascal's Wager. What I'm trying to say is different. I used the "Appeal to fear" to persuade them that Atheism in the long run is not logical. And hope that they'd realize that and find faith elsewhere.

IMO, you shouldn't have tried. People will believe what they want to believe and, unless they can't decide ANYTHING for themselves, won't listen to such a flawed way of persuasion. Again, that's just my opinion, though.

What is logical in a belief in a god? What makes your logic any special than my ... logic.

That theory has been tried and tried again. Now let me ask you a question Big_Red. Do you believe in God with 100% of your mind and heart? Because if you don't, like me, then you must be an Atheist. I find flaws in the Bible and Christianity, and all the other religions I've studied so I cannot believe unless it's 100%. I might lie to you, doubtful, but I'm not lying to myself or God if there is one.

Well, you're using it whether you're trying to or not. The fact remains that people cannot will themselves into believing something that they think is false.

Now I know that alot of you are thinking to yourselves "Oh no you didn't!!!" But just hear me out. Lets say that the Christian God doesn't exist. Ad someone has been a strong believing christian all of their life, and then they die. And instead of going to heaven, they just cease to be existing. In every sense of the word. Okay now lets say that their is a christian God, and everything in The Bible does exist. And someone is an atheist, so when they die they face the horrors of hell for eternity. Do you get my point now? Is it worth it?

Let me explain this from a different approach. Lets say your'e taking the SAT, or ACT. And you have a minute left, but you have one passage to read, and six more questions. Your'e not going to leave those questions blank, are you? No, not if youre smart. Your'e going to guess on the six, and not read the passage. Because if you don't answer it, your'e going to automatically get those questions wrong. But if you gues you have a 1/4 chance of getting it right. So pick a religion, and hope that it's the right one. Besides, what're the chances that everything in the universe came to be from a massive explosion?

And just because I used Christianity as an example, that doesn't mean that I'm trying to convert you to Christianity, I only used it as an example, so don't flame me for that.

Discuss.

Well, it takes a certain lack of understanding of the power of some arguments for someone to be trying to argue for religion anyways. If a person could truly respect the un-deniability (or lack thereof) of many arguments, they wouldn't be arguing for religion in the first place.
