Catholicism is the 'whore of Babylon'. In other words, they are chrsitians who have been lead astray. Many of their beliefs are either not in the Bible or directly contradict it.

Hewkii

I doubt it, and in either case I can guarantee that most poor Christians (American, anyway) aren't Catholic.

You doubt what? Also, yes most Christians in the States arent Catholic.

I'd wager poverty is the common denominator here.

locopatho

And we have a winner. That and a lack of education I would add.

You guys do realize that you are calling 90% of Americans poor and education lacking! Because the statistics the Topic Maker makes are based on Christians; poor people are more likely Catholic and not Christian. It just proves that the Statistics may be innacurate or made up.

Catholic is Christian..... :|

Catholicism is the original Christrian religon, what are you talking about?

It was the original yes, but it has changed substantially since the first century AD. That's why protestants and other sect exist today, they disagreed with what the Catholics were doing. For example, killing people in the name of God or his glory. Anyone with a brain would realise that is against the 10 commandments etc. Anyway, I dont want to delve any further into this, we have too many religious arguments on OT.

I'm one of those "other guys". I'd like to know how you took my quote of "I'd wager poverty is the common denominator" and proceeded to twist it into your bizarre accusation of us calling 90% of Americans poor and education lacking.

Because the Statistics are from America.

A religion is defined by beliefs, not by how much someone reads a book or attends a congregation.

interesting. probably people who go to prison and find christianity didnt have a strong belief in atheism in the first place. changing your whole belief system isnt that easy. anyway. it seems like there are a lot more christians than i thought. damn thats sad.

[QUOTE="Fire_Ants"]Well, a larger population will still factor to how many are in the prison. There are also alot of other factors that effect why hardly any of the atheist population is in prison.

It's all about factors :?

Oleg_Huzwog

Population size should not impact population ratio. If X% of the general population wears glasses, then it'd be expected that X% of the prison population wears glasses. If the two percentages do not equal, then there must be some characteristic about people who wear glasses that make them more or less likely to go to prison.

I get what your saying. So basically, since alot of the population that is in poverty (and those who are more likely to commit a crime) makes up alot of the christian population, there will be more chrisitans in the jails, since the small population of Atheists, which only a few are would-be criminals, aren't likely to commit crimes.

I guess, but please tell me if I totally missed the point :P

Fire_Ants

Yep, you've got it.

If someone in poverty is statistically more likely to go to prison...
AND if someone in poverty is statistically more likely to be Christian...
Then it's reasonable to assume a disproportionately larger number of prisoners are also Christian.

At the other end, if a wealthy person is statistically more likely to stay out of prison...
AND if a wealthy person is statistically more likely to be athiest...
Then it's reasonable to assume a disproportionately smaller number of prisoners are athiest.

The contention seems to be borne out by statistics:

Atheists, who make up somewhere between 3-14% of the population make up just 0.2% of the prison population.

Christians, on the other hand, who make up 81% of the population make up 84% of the prison population.

In fact, a Christian is at least 15 times more likely on average to end up in jail than an atheist.

atheists live life for the best, because they think thats all they have

christians think its okay to do bad things because if you repent before you die you goto heaven

exactly

plus it ok to kill in the name of god.

Because your average Christian kills in the name of God every now and then.

It's amazing how absent-minded you guys are! We don't kill in the name of God! Plus the Religious also live live to the fullest! Why wouldn't they?

lol we are absent-minded? this coming from a guy who thinks religious people live the fullest. Lemme give you a hint: atheists think this is the only life we get, therefore we have to make the most out of it.

Weird, but no. The only explanation I can think of is, and it's a shaky one. Becoming an Atheist took many years of thought and consideration on my part. People who look into themselves that much may realize how stupid crime is. Again, just a thought, not meant to piss anyone off.

I am Christian, and I'm not "morally superior" to anybody, i do the same stuff other people do(not to the extent of others but still), why? Cause I'm human. The difference is that I do not want to do those things and try my best not to do them.

Those aren't major stat differences to come to that conclusion whatsoever. Also, I've heard blacks might have more that claim to be Christian and are more likely to go to prison. And, some people turn to Christianity in prison.

No one is morally superior to the other. It has nothing to do with religion, it's all about morals. A horrible person could be christian or atheist, religion doesn't determine that.

From the brief time I spent locked up in maximum security, I came to the conclusion I was the only Atheist in my unit, which held about 30 inmates. Everyone who wasn't on room confinement attended the church service held on sunday. My roommate spent almost as much time trying to convert me as he did telling me stories of violent acts he's committed in and out of the Hall.

People with higher IQs are more likely to describe themselves as atheist (according to many sources) and based on experience I would guess that people who have higher IQs are less likely to do things that would land one in prison, and of the ones who do such things, they are probably less likely to be caught.

I feel like I've said this a thousand times, but correlation does not equal causation.

The first and second does not weigh much against Christians.... a small percent of the population naturally creates a small percent of the prison population in a country as large as ours. But if it is true that Christians are fifteen times more likely, then perhaps you have something.

Atheists, who make up somewhere between 3-14% of the population make up just 0.2% of the prison population.

Christians, on the other hand, who make up 81% of the population make up 84% of the prison population.

In fact, a Christian is at least 15 times more likely on average to end up in jail than an atheist.

Theres no such thing as morally superior because morals are not set in stone, therefore people can only be morally different.
