Go to wonderland, perhaps dreaming forever? (Inception anyone) But... don't thoughts seize to exist when the brain shutsdown? Or after death you can just see and hear nothingness. No longer believing in an after life or a greater power and/or death. Just imagine not exsisting for forever. Or do you want to be somewhere after.

Nothingness would this imply to you, the atheist after death?

Have you had thoughts of what's after death when you started to not believe.

Your afterlife is through the memories of everyone still surviving. Some people have been able to achieve immortality through this method. Others simply only last a couple extra generations.

Of course I WANT there to be something afterwords. It would be great if there was a heaven. But wanting a concept a and believing it to be real are two different things.

Yes, nothingness would apply because your consciousness would be no more without a brain.

Of course, some people do believe in the dream theory essentially. Since time is relative, in theory, the last second of your life could be stretched to an eternity. I think that would be pretty cool actually. Of course, knowing my family they'd wake my ass up just in the right time and I'd be the first human ever to actually die.

It'll depend on if consciousness is something fundamental to the brain's function and arisen through it, or if consciousness and subjective experience are fundamental to nature and directed through the brain like power through a transformer. Science hasn't been able to say either way so far, so it's still up in the air. I do believe that if we die and continue existing, that we will lose our human personality and traits that we had here since that is all thoughts based through the brain, which will ultimately die.

This. When you die, what makes you, you, dies; because personality is physical in the brain. But I don't think we know entirely about what goes on in the brain or how we are able to experience life, so we can't really make any definite conclusions.

Exactly. Consciousness as I would imagine it existing beyond death, would be pure awareness rather than individualized personality. All our thoughts that we identify with and use to show who we are, are just thoughts in our mind, so when we die there is no doubt we will lose all of that. It could very well be like certain Buddhist beliefs say, in which when we die, our consciousness returns to the one consciousness that gives rise to all form, and you basically "sleep" until you are reincarnated in one of endless forms.

I'm not sure what you mean by,"pure awareness," because you can't really envision life without a brain to process information. Our lives are as remarkable as the fact that there is a universe in the first place. We always think that life is something special, beyond electrical signals and tissue. It may not be, and our lives could simply fully begin and end with life and death individually without reincarnation.

Exactly. The idea of an afterlife has always been ridiculous to me, even at a young age. If there's a postlife then there should be a prelife too...

I don't know and I have no way of knowing except killing myself, in which case it would be a fruitless exercise because I wouldn't be able to answer your question.

That would make me less nervous about going to Hell then, if a lot of people there were only there because they had no belief in the afterlife.

Quite honestly, I believe that you'll feel like how you did before you were born, which is nothingness. I believe it is your brain that controls who you are and what knid of person you are. Take for example the very controversial surgical prodecure in the 1900s to 1950s called a lobotomy. This is a procedure where one would remove the nerve fibers of the frontal lobe of the brain. The results were very unpredictable and sometimes caused death. The few that did survive would usually exhibit a very bland personality or lack of personality. The frontal lobe controls a multitude of emotions ranging from happiness to anger, and is what essentially defines your personality. It is because of horrible surgical treatments like this that my answer would be that after our brain stops functioning after death, which can be a few hours, I believe we stop existing. For more reference on how lobotomies affect people, I highly reccommend watching "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest".

Continuing on my last sentence, one may believe we exist forever in those few hours or minutes that our brain still functions after death, but would you really call that existance? Take for example one who is in a coma, the person's brain is still functioning is breathing and still alive. However, they are unresponsive to phystical stimuli and sound. People do wake up from coma's, but it's not like how the media portrays it. Very rarely do people after awaking from a coma do they function normally right after or ever. In the vegetative state of a coma, I believe that you don't exist, your personality is in your brain, but you are nowhere. You are even aware of your surroundings. This is the situation i believe you are in after you die before your brain totally ceases to function. To end my argument, I would like to say that I'm not an atheist, I consider myself agnostic.

I'm not an atheist but I think afterlife is ANOTHER life. We just live as another person, newly-born with no idea of your past-memories. Heck we don't even know that we're part of the WWII mighty soldiers. It's just my opinion though.

Well, I would love it if there was something after death, but I believe that when you're dead, you're dead, and that's it. Although have you ever tried to imagine not existing? Like not thinking, or moving, or having any conciousness at all? It's scary! :?

It's the same as everyone. If God does exist, he won't discriminate just because I didn't believe in him. More likely, nothing is going to happen. I'll be dead.
