Any single by Kid Cudi. Btw, when I think pop, I think whatever would air on kiss fm.

Is everyone on this forum a anti-mainstream brat? It's why I don't come on here much anymore...Shmiity
This doesnt even make sense. What atypical pop songs have I heard? Atypical how? All of these awesome pop songs have great hooks, big choruses, a riff, a lyric that sticks out. Thats why theyre popular.

I'm not saying that I dislike pop songs with great hooks and big choruses and what not. I love a great pop song and I think people who write them off are generally being superficial. I'm asking is there any song that people would classify as pop that you think is especially out of the ordinary or has characteristics that are not typical of pop. I don't mean to rag on pop music.
What a blanket statement... what is a "typical" pop sound? Do you mean structure? Do you even know how sophisticated her arrangements are? Or do you just see the name "lady gaga" and write her off? Is everyone on this forum a anti-mainstream brat?ShmiityCan you explain how sophisticated her arrangements are? And I would hardly consider myself anti-mainstream. Also, why are you always such a prick when people discuss pop music?

In Paparazzi, she uses secondary dominant harmonies (specifically a V/V). In Bad Romance, she mixes both major and minor modes, and throws in a little harmonic minor by using an E chord, in A minor.
Of course her structures are simple- but so are all good songs... You can reduce an entire Beethoven symphony to just I-V, and just two sections, A, B.
Repitition is a huge part of music, sometimes people forget how closely linked classical music and pop music are. The only real difference is the text. ...and no voice leading rules.
I get wicked upset when people trash pop music. Why wouldnt you want to make something simple? Complicated for the sake of complicated is crap.

I don't get wicked upset (it's not worth getting upset over IMO), but I do think the pop-bashing is based on alot of preconcieved notions that anti-pop folks never explain/back up.

I get that feeling too. I mean, I once argued with someone whose whole argument was always "pop is fluff!" ad nauseum without ever elaborating further and then they acted like that generalization was some kind of crushing argument. One has to wonder why those people insist on being so vague.
That's not to say that I'm some kind of expert on music. I'm just a music appreciator that knows his music history and some very basic things about composition. But then again, I try not to have a condescending attitude about music.
And I'm not saying that anybody has to like pop music if that's not their cup of tea. But the generalizations that pop-haters make are usually ignorant.
