Vesica_Prime
Apparently not, this is all I could find about the law being dumped ""From the feedback we've received through AdelaideNow, the blogging generation believes that the law supported by all MPs and all political parties is unduly restrictive. I have listened. I will immediately after the election move to repeal the law retrospectively... It may be humiliating for me, but that's politics in a democracy and I'll take my lumps." So it seems it will apply to this comming election, and then some government officials will try to get rid of it, whether or not that succeeds we'll find out. However the simple fact it even got thought up, let alone passed through is worrying. A government that could pull this off needs disbanding asap...

Its not the people that want this, its the government that are conservative, human rights violating, backwards thinking, primitive Nazis who thinks they're speaking for the entire population that wants this. We're not the enemy, the government is.

yep, you only need to look at the polls and surveys of the people. The citizens over here are completely against all these reforms the government is shoving down our throats, the government just doesn't seem to care.

They seem to have missed the whole "democracy" thing and have instead discovered the whole "communism" thing.

For a country that used to be little more than a prisoner dump, it's amazing how strict and backwards the government there has been the past decade. Do people not care and vote for whoever or does the government just have too much freedom to pass things through?

lol, Australia just keeps getting worse. If you fear giving people freedom, it reflects on how you as a government are failing. Such as the whole Movie fiasco and video game banning. Don't punish game and movie companies for your own incompetence. How about making stricter regulations on the issue? Make it a crime (or bigger crime) to allow underage people access to mature content. The Aussie government is messed up...how do these new laws pass? Don't people complain?

Edit: Just read the law got thrown out according to the poster above me, so ignore my tirade :P

It is weird. But the reason the law was changed so quickly (literally overnight) was because Michael Atkinson was the one who passed it (on the down-low), then when people found out about it they FLIPPED OUT and the government was forced to retract it.

With Atkinson gone now, I have hope for a less censored Australia.

They pass due to stupid conservative right-wingers running the show. It will pass eventually. People are getting sick of it, and being a democracy, this will have to change eventually. Its just taking its sweet time about it.

Today in class I was asked by my obsessively nationalist teacher 'what do you like most about Australia?' I said it was a backwards thinking, primitive, conservative, human rights violating, lazy country that does not even compare to other countries abroad.

He didn't like it one bit at all, especially when the only positive thing I said about Australia is that it is a landmass I live on.

Most of the stuff people talk about on these forums I've never even heard of, so, personally, I would argue if it's even been on local news, let alone national news.

It's not like the Nazi's invading Russia and Poland, it's more like a couple of Nazi officers forcing themselves on German women who are already known around town as easy. This metaphor is really going nowhere.

In other words, if this was really a big thing I'm sure I'd have heard of it. In other news, Australia and its government is crap for a whole lot of other reasons. I'm Australian. I'm saying it's crap. If this law is real you can go **** yourself, Government. Viva la Revelooshun!

Nah, we're too laid back to revolt.

Not even close. The Patriot Act merely gave the government easier access to phone, financial, and medical records for the purposes of combating terrorism. It also made it easier for government to tap into phone converstations that at either come from or go to foreign phone lines. I don't think that it is unreasonable for government to monitor phone conversations entering or exiting this country. It's the government's job to stop foreign espionage and detect foreign plots against our security. I don't think that a phone converstation to Pakistan should have any expectation of privacy, considering recent history.

Should have said, "koalas." Everyone loves koalas.
