I think this is an interesting move. For centuries we've been told from the day we're born that there's a God but finally Humanism is been given some time and consideration.

Edit: And before theists start ranting and flaming, this is an elective subject and parents can choose not to have their children in the clas s

Hmm...im seeing a double standard here... When school teach about the existence god, atheist go crazy over the issue, but now that a school is teaching against His existence you are all in support? Personally I believe in equality and I'm opposed to telling students God exists as I am at telling students that God doesn't exist. Let the kids make their own choice.

Yep. And I only say that because I'm still in school and I'm sick of learning about religion. None of the students care about it.

As far as I'm aware, there's never been any official separation of Church and State, but then there's never been any real reason to do so in the history of our country. I don't see how this could be detrimental in the way of faith controlling politics, as it's an optional class. Besides, I've heard enough of Archbishop Pell blabbering on and making his subjective beliefs known to all of Sydney so it's good to hear that there's a different perspective being shown.

I don't mind, it is just little things that annoy me, our politician's recite the Lord's Prayer or something before everyday in parliament. I think the education system is fine, I have gone to public school all my life and at each one have only been taught evolution, the change is only in regard to Religious Education classes, so I assume it is high-school kids being given the chance to hear the atheist viewpoint along with the study of various religions.

Well atheism is merely the non belief in a God/Gods. It shouldn't need to be taught. If someone is taking a religious education class then that is what should be taught. That would be like taking calculus and having some Shakespeare thrown in.

When it comes to other people's beliefs, we Australians are very apathetic. Yes there are many, many Christians but we as a whole get along well. It probably ties back to being a convict colony and being so very isolated from the rest of the world that Australians have learnt to accept one another's differences. That being said, those damn Europeans brought their Catholic/Protestant wars over here that took a long while to subside.

No, the way the current education system is or was when I attended was once a week we had Religious Education (only in primary school) the class was non graded and non compulsory. Therefor kids who'se parents didnt want them in that class got to go to do alternative activities. From what the article seems is they are now having the opposite available, so there is a good chance both classes will be run.

EDIT LOL WHUT

I understand and agree with your point, what I was trying to say was that the article may have been in reference to a "religion and philosophy" type class, like is available at my college (grades 11&12). It is the study of different religions from an objective standpoint, not similar to a religious education class at a theist private school. However the article could also have been in reference to some public schools (I have no idea if this is the case in Victoria) where there is a religious education class AVAILABLE for those parents who want their children to do it, and they have just added atheist ideas as an option for children to be educated about.

They're not teaching Atheism. They're teaching humanism. If you bothered reading the article and my additional note at the end, parents can choose to not have their children attend the class. It's really that simple. Our government is not totalitarian and our society won't make a fuss over something this trivial.

I feel we have a kind of self-imposed secularity amongst people, nothing official, but it is nowhere as near blatantly shoved in your face as it is when I see things about the US for example.

This should be very interesting to say the least. If they taught that in my school, I suppose it would have made my Religious Studies exam a hell of a lot more easier.

I was in a private school and was forced to choose between Catholic Studies (which didn't count towards the HSC) and Studies of Religion 1 (Which did count) and in the end, Studies of Religion boiled down to more studying about Christianity. What a rip off.

Edit: And before theists start ranting and flaming, this is an elective subject and parents can choose not to have their children in the clas s

they should not be teaching that there is no god or that there is a god... they should be teaching we dont know! Just stick to stuff we know like facts

[QUOTE="sAndroid17"][QUOTE="Red-XIII"] I was in a private school and was forced to choose between Catholic Studies (which didn't count towards the HSC) and Studies of Religion 1 (Which did count) and in the end, Studies of Religion boiled down to more studying about Christianity. What a rip off.Whicker89
yeha i started at a private school, but it was waaaay to catholic for my tastes and i would always get in fights with the nuns about religion  so i left and went to a pretty rough and tumble school. much more my taste :P

Yeah its not a proper public school unless there has been atleast 1 knife fight and a few pregnancys

hahaha funny you should say that, because when i was there, there actualy was two knife fights. lol. no pregnancies though

Seems fair enough, if you're going to teach about religons you should also teach about lack of religon

Pretty much only reason I'm Australian is my ancestor was too lazy to get up early for the ship to america and went to australia instead
