Avatar.

I hated how District 9 turns into this hardcore action movie with robots.

District 9, by far the better movie. While I didn't hate Avatar, I really didn't like it that much. The story was simple, but it was still told well, but D9 had more interesting characters. District 9 is a 9.0 movie for me. Avatar 8-8.5, and if my math is right, 9>8.5. So, I thought D9 was better

District 9, hands down. I had no hesitation at all. Avatar was a movie I really did enjoy, but felt as if I've seen it all before. I knew where the plot was going the whole time. Amazing environment though. I felt like the forest was just as real as the ghetto in District-9, which is amazing. District-9 Sucked me in from the get-go. The documentary style beginning, which transitions into a traditional movie was a perfect way to grab my attention, and I cringed at Wilkus' transformations (i felt he was a real person), was disgusted at the treatment of the aliens, and rooted for CJ and his alien baby. I was floored by it. I remember leaving the theater thinking I just saw something fresh. I was exhausted, because I was so emotionally invested in the characters and plot. And I love the humorous tone of District-9. Many times I laughed at Wilkus' dialogue and his actions, and the ridiculousness of the exploding bodies always made me smile. I felt Wilkus was a real character. I didn't get the satisfaction from Avatar of feeling like I really knew any of the characters. I only knew what Jake's actions were going to be because I already knew where the plot was going. The ending of D-9: Most people don't like when the 'end' is left up to the imagination, but I can say I didn't mind it in D-9. Less is almost always more. (Like that quote "I did not have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one") It's always easy to come up with a million ideas, but harder to knock it down to 10 great ones. The main plot had run it's course and the director made the wise decision of ending it. I was exhausted from the journey I took, and any more might have soured my experience. I left the theater wanting to talk to everyone about it! You'll notice I don't talk too much about Avatar , but I think that is exactly the point. I have nothing really to say about it because nothing resonated with me.

Well told or not, a cliche, is in a sense, a sign of repetition.Raikoh_
but who gives a damn as long as it's well told and entertaining? I mean goddamn, most of your music is probably incredibly repetitive, regardless of genre.

District 9 can't even hold a candle to Avatar.

Also, these claims of supposed clichéness are becoming quite cliché.

I'm not sure if this topic has already been done, but even if it has, I am doing it again. I have only seen District 9 and it was amazing, so that's where my vote is in.

You really shouldn't vote in this poll if you haven't seen both... which is why I didn't.

I have only seen District 9. I don't have any intention to watch Avatar as it appears to be a mere visual effects showcase with a generic, uninteresting plot and characters. I voted District 9 as it was a great film.

Just watch the film and then make an educated opinion. I thought the same before I saw Avatar, but I loved it.

District 9, because I left the theater wanting more and more...

Avatar had a good ending but I felt there could've been more done. Both great movies of '09.

Avatar definitely. To be fair I haven't seen district 9, but in a year when both Star Trek and Watchmen came out, a movie must be unfathomably good for me consider ranking it above those two. And Avatar is that good.

District 9 by a mile. I came in here thinking this might actually have been a joke thread...I'm still inclined to think so since the poll is for "better movie" and not which movie you like better...

I liked District 9 better then Avatar. And I saw Avatar in a big theater in 3D. I mean while Avatar's enviroments were amazing, I think D9's Prawns were more realistic then the Na'vi. Plus I like D9's story and actors better.

Originality wise District 9 crushes Avatar (along with pretty much anything else).

Overall story and experience wise I would say Avatar. Its story felt more compelling (though familiar).

I thought District 9 was great, but Avatar was better. Even though its story was a little cliche, the whole movie looked beautiful and really took you somewhere else.
