Well, which of these two films do you think has the better CGI? I personally think its TRANSFORMERS. Not only did ILM have to completely render the Autobots and Decepticons, they also had to animate them from scratch. In Avatar, they used motion capture for the animation. So, from a technical standpoint, it didn't require as much skill. Also, though most of the scenes in Avatar were absolutely breathtaking, there were scenes in which the skin of the Na'vi didn't look realistic and had a plastic like appearance. As for Transformers, I think the Autobots and Decepticons looked absolutely real. ILM did a really good job with the texture of the metallic surfaces, the way light and reflections appeared on the surfaces, the animations of the individual parts on the robots (shifting gears, etc.), and the overall animation of the robots. What's your opinion on this? Please provide a reason for your answer.

EDIT:

I just learned that ILM animated Avatar as well. I didn't know that. Wow. These guys are the best in the business. They're so good, that the only work which can compete with theirs...is their own.

If I am judging them only on special effects I will go with Avatar. Story wise though both are garbage in my opinion

Lulz. Most people say that. However, though I'll admit that Avatar was a bad film aside from its use of CGI, Transformers was pretty good in my opinion. It just brings the kid out of me.

I could tolerate the first Transformers movie and it really was not bad I just really hated the 2nd one.

I preferred Transformers to be honest, and I hated Megan Fox. I like Sam Worthington though.

I can agree with this statement. However, just to be clear, I'm referring to the first Transformers in the OP.

Well with the special effects I still would go with Avatar over Transformers and by movie quality I enjoyed the first Transformers and Avatar about the same

The Transformers look pretty darn real, but the characters in Avatar just don't look quite right. I'm not sure why.

its easier recreate metallic textures than fleshy live ones. just having many scenes where the navi do look believable (and youll notice that the navi look their most life-like in the all important closeups) makes avatar a bigger accomplishment in terms of sheer cgi crafting.

its not like the performances in avatar were just colored in. they had to completely fill in the tails and recreate the actors' tongues and eyes (all of which are major outlets for emotions).

also, they did pioneer cg lighting techniques in avatar, which is obviously a big part of the filmmaker's visual toolset.

While I thought that avatar and the transformers movies were fun to watch I think the transformers CGI was more impressive. IMO everything on avatar looked like it had a layer of wax on it.

Am I the only one who thinks Megan Fox looks like a sun burned street walker? And good God is she dumber than rocks... not at all attractive.

You hit the nail right on the head. I was looking for a way to describe the way certain things in the film appeared. "Wax" is the perfect word.

She doesn't look sunburned. She looks well tanned.

She looks 10 minutes in a tanning bed away from Melenoma... and like I said, she just does not look good to me.
