I've already started.

I think it's only fair that you never praise a movie that has a cliched story. The second it comes out, you must instantly bash it.

Don't see where you're getting that from. I'm not the one bashing Avatar for having a cliched story.

Yeah we've all seen the basic storyline before but honestly it didn't bother me in the slightest. The world was so immersive and captivating that I didn't care a huge amount about the story.

I assumed you were one of the cliche bashers since you were the one that seemed annoyed about the defenders. I haven't been keeping track of who supports what. I apologize for my ineptitude.

Cut him some slack, everyone is entitled to air his opinion...if you don't like it, don't post.

Then whats the point of argument? Why would anyone argue anything, ever? Because we all have different opinions. I'm entitled to my opinion too. And I'm entitled to disagree.

Why can't people just enjoy the movie and shut up about it. Who cares, I like thecliche story, I like the decent CGI, I like the acting, I like the colonel, I like the girl from Fast and Furious, I like everything about the movie.

It was awesome. The story wasn't anything special, but it was told well, although it could've been more interesting. I liked the bit with the connection stuff though.

Can everyone please stop with the cliche storyline threads about Avatar? When did people all of a sudden turn into film critics?

Where were these threads when people were praising Transformers 2?

What about District 9, which gets so much love in here? Isnt that filled with one action movie cliche after another?

Avatar isnt trying to have an original story, it is trying to have a story that is easy to understand so it immerses us into its amazing world and makes us care about the characters. In that aspect, the movie is an enormous success.

Ace_WondersX

Strange, I thought District 9 managed to avoid several action movie cliches.

Hey I am a random guy with no training, let me just use this random alien tech to kill swarms of people.

Before I even watched it, my friend told me how the movie starts. "So this guy from a group of people want to sabotage some other people..." Oh, so then he's gonna become friends with those people, and go against his own people? Right. I mean is all the hype for this movie because of how good it looks? It was definitely one of the prettiest movies I've seen, but as for the storyline, I've been there, done that. What do you think? Probably everyone's gonna disagree. :P

rubber-chicken

Have I already done the "this man is not my nephew even though I agree with everything he says" gag yet?

And for the guy above: People on this board seem to generally hate Transformers 2 apart from the girl it seems.

District 9 had some original ideas in its opening.

What you said was that he shouldn't have aired his opinion in the first place, because lots of other people had also said the same thing. That being true doesn't change the fact that he's entitled to air that tired old opinion again and again if he so wishes. What I meant was that if you disapprove of the re-posting of a similar thread, why get involved? Since by doing so, you continue the perpetuation of that which you purport to oppose, no?

no, it was incredibly cliche. it was basically the oldest story in the book, save the original flood myth. that didn't keep it from being incredible, though. you know, like Star Wars.

There is none. People are so strongly divided on this movie that numerous clashes are inevitable... as such, both sides are going to get angry, and no one is going to get anywhere. I doubt I could change your opinion on this film BL, just I doubt you could change mine. We really need to let these threads die...

there's only about five pages of 'relevant' material (ie, not about the little pictures above our names). of those, most are complaining about the movie, some are comparing it to other movies that made a lot, a couple are surprised about the length and box office results, and ~4-5 are actually praising it. not exactly an even distribution. hell, there's about the same number of threads comparing it to District 9 as general praise for it.

Nah, the two might be mistaken if you don't know what you're doing. I mean, cliche is just hackneyed or stereotypical. But, at the same time, if it is purposefully hackneyed then it is satire, and not necessarily bad.

Satire is purposefully hackneyed to invoke humor, ridicule or irony. Avatar isnt going for any of those.

The storyline may have been cliche and done better in other films, but you know what is was damn entertaining. It wasn't the best film of the year by far, and the characters were flat as hell but I still enjoyed it despite that.

What I thought of the movie:

Story: 8/10 - Cliche but fun to watch.

Sound/Music: 9/10 - Don't you just love the African Tribe music?

CGI: 7/10 - Not as good as Transformers 2.

Acting: 10/10 - Tehcharacter's EMOTIONS are by far the best, it made me actually care for them.

I enjoyed it as it was one of the first 3d films I've seen that didn't use it as a gimmick. Story was pretty forgetable though and the characters weren't up to much (the only character who's name I knew by the end was Jake Sully). Still it at least had a montage.

But there's no (Intentional) humour whatsoever. And all the slow motion shots of people dying at the end suggests that it takes itself very seriously.

Yar it seems to be quite serious. I don't think that just being critical means it is satire.
