I just got done watching two batman films (city of scars, and under the red hood), and a playthrough of arkham asylum, and it amazes me how much of a coward batman really is. He literally could have saved thousands of lives if he would just use lethal force and discard his self-righteous moral code. He just comes across as a self-indulgent character with the maturity of a 13-year old. So your parents got shot, so what? you're a billionaire playboy. Go buy your own personal island and cry yourself to sleep. Why would any villain be a afraid of a guy that wears his underwear outside his costume and doesn't have the balls to kill anyone? The only reason i think he took up being a superhero was to feed his own ego. Batman is a capitalist icon, **** that guy

Yep. Batman could do nothing and be a hero, but instead he is a coward and risks his life and tries to save lives.

For what it's worth, Batman DID try to murder the Joker in the Hush storyline. It was only when Jim Gordon put a gun to Batman's head that he backed off.

Yes, because he's mentally weak and afraid of breaking his personal moral code. Hence the cowardice, in the absence of which he'd have saved many lives. :| :|

mexicangordo

so he's willing to let countless innocents die as long he doesn't 'sink down to their level'

gotcha

I thought he was supposed to be the dark knight? I thought that allowed him to do things the police couldnt. if he wants to abide by some self-imposed moral code so much why doesnt he just ditch the cape and become a police officier?

What if a guy murders a dozen people, gets captured, escapes, murders another dozen, gets captured, escapes, murders another dozen, and so forth? Wouldn't society benefit from the one and only solution that guarantees the cycle ends?

What everyone is forgetting here is that Batman is completely insane. Every bit as crazy as his rogues gallery, more so in some cases. He has a fanatical devotion to his cause, and his moral code, which is unflinching. He is not a utilitarian. He lives by a set of in inmutable principles that he doesn't ever go against. The way he lives and the choices he makes are mostly due to his psychosis.

I don't know if I'd call him a coward, but he is a fool. He's also severely disturbed mentally. You're right in saying this Batman charade is a method to feed his own needs. In all honestly, it probably isn't to benefit anyone but himself. If he thought rationally, then yes, killing Joker would be the obvious choice. But he's not rational. He's just as disturbed as the villians he locks away. This theme of insanity plays out in the game Arkham Aslyum, if you'll remember the final Scarecrow encounter. His greatest fear is to become "insane." And his obsessive, yet counter-productive, moral code is his way to gaurantee it never happens. But I believe the creators left it open for the public to determine if Batman has already "lost it" or not. Director Tim Burton, for example, considers Batman to be insane and chose Michael Keaton because he felt his eyes expressed insanity.

This is what I love about Batman. As a psychology student, and future psychologist, Batman is my favorite superhero and probably always will be. He also has the best collection of super villians I've ever seen.

I see Superman is listed in the poll.

If Superman killed people, he wouldn't be freaking Superman.

Read "Kingdom Come." Read "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" Read "Superman: Redemption." Read "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?"

Edit: I meant "Birthright," not "Redemption."

No. If you're going to insult a fictional character, the least you can do is familiarize yourself with said character.

Besides, I have organ practice and not enough time to summarize.
