I suppose Ive been suffering through clinical depression for about 4 years. Im always pessimistic about everything in life, I find that there is very little to no point in doing anything for that matter. I also always have suicidal thoughts, though religion prevents me from committing suicide, so you dont have to bother with that. Anyways, I would like to know some of the ways OT posters treat their depression, but nothing to do with therapy

If you have clinical depression, you should continue seeing the doctor that diagnosed it.

:DWipe depression out of your mind. Think energy, thing gaming fun, get some sun and listen to some great music. If you energize your mind and body, depression won't exist. There is so much in this world to do and have fun. Check out some Anime's, some Comics, Some movies. Play online and enjoy your life. Lots of people have it worst off.

Had depression a long time ago when I was 15. Still get sad sometimes, but not for long. But guess what, I realized that life is just a sequence of events that we are presented with. Now I can continue to be pissed/depressed, or I can just enjoy the heck out of life. Now bad stuff doesn't get me down long, I go out and enjoy my opportunities, good or bad. You make what you can with the life that is presented to you, and let stuff roll off your shoulders, or brush it off if it tends to stick around. Good luck.

If it is really that bad (diagnosed, clinical depression), then you are most likely not going to be able to handle it on your own ...and those that are able to handle it usually have figured out a way to cope/manage it by now (4 years) Go to see a professional and life a better life is my advice. You should try and live the best life you can IMO

Then don't let your depression get in the way. Go see a doctor, if it is a hormone imbalance, they can give you stuff to help. Either that, or just wake up one morning and tell yourself, I hate feeling like crap, screw you depression I am going to have a great rest of my life. It does work, worked for me. But, those are just tips.

I've never had clinical depression, but at times in my life that I felt down or anxious, I always found thinking about where it was coming from and what I could do about it always helped. Taking action, even mostly ineffective action, always lifts my spirits.

Have you actually been diagnosed with clinical depression, or is this a self diagnosis?

If you're having suicidal thoughts then even though you don't want to - seek medical advice. I can't really relate to how religion helps you because I'm an Atheist myself, but if it does help you then I advise you go to church even more and speak to your local Priest/Reverend/Pastor or whatever the hell (no pun intended) they are called.

These suicidal thoughts, are they just thoughts, or have you taken to self harm? Speaking from experience, self harm may seem to help you to regain some form of control over your thoughts/actions, but it is of course only a temporary effect.

By the way, how old are you?

The things that helped me battle through depression were talking to friends, doing hobbies I enjoy, being more active, and the one thing that is really important is getting a good sleep and eating schedule. When I was depressed I was only up at night and slept during the day. You have to get up before noon and eat 3 times a day like normal. If you stopped seeing people when you get depressed it just makes it worse.

See a psychiatrist, you will probably be prescribed with some sort of antidepressant, it should greatly improve your current state.

If a simple religion is stopping you then you haven't got clinical depression. If you've got depression you should go to a therapist and get properly diagnosed and treated.

TC, i went through a recurrent major depression for four years. I am now well.

My advice to you is

a) exercise, aside from the sciencey endorphins crap, it really works. I used to play a hell of a lot of squash, i was not very good as i had ME and it knackered me, but for goodness sake, exercise is just a brilliant anti-depressant.Plus depressives get lazy and you don't want ot put on weight, because you won't feel good in yourself. (Unless you are a jolly fat person, then that is fine)

b) meet new people, hell, even if it is making a friend over xbox live or WOW, try to get involved in parties or communal activities. This honestly really helps. And i know you will feel a bit like a social troll and want to do nothing of the sort, but the only way you are getting better is if you commit, do so.

c) Read. You might hate books, but i always find they are great company.

d) Find something creative to do. If you're musical, artistic, have writing ability, or whatever, exploit this. Most depressives are creative in some way, it's simply a weird fact. Probably because they're more sensitive to the world around them.

e) See a doctor. I put this last, as it normally only stops you from going so low, so low that you might off yourself. But i found that the doctors never helped me get better, i helped yourself, since you are adamant you won't commit suicide, you could give this a miss. But even seeking councilling from say your parents or friends can help. They don't need to be proffessionals, just ask their advice and tell them how you feel.

If you do start feeling suicidal. Go straight to a doctor. Before you do something selfish and stupid.

Sorry if that's long. But i know where you are coming from.

this is going to sound weird, but my advice is to cry. Crying helps oyu to let all of your emotions out, and afterwards you almost always feel cleansed and better, especially if you cry on someone you trust.

Cheer yourself up or take pills. Posting on Gamespot will not help.
