Just before the mp3,mp4 players and IPods dominated the market, there was the gadget that started the trend of portable music...The Walkman...how many of you have owned such? And do you think that it can still make a comeback to end the monopoly?

My first portable music player was a discman, and I loved it, especially when I upgraded to one that could play mp3 files; then I bought a re-writable CD and I could carry a lot of music (for the time) around with me and change it whenever I wanted by re-writing the CD. It was kind of like a clumsier iPod shuffle. :P

And no, I don't think the walkman can make a comeback for two reasons:

1. Cassettes are dead, and rightfully so.

2. Sony owns the "Walkman" brand, so technically walkmans didn't go anywhere.

There is no monopoly in portable music market. There is plenty of competition but Apple just has done a better job marketing their product than others.

And no, I have never owned a Sony Walkman.

Edit: Are you asking if the Walkman can make a comeback as a portable player that plays cassets or as a portable player that can play MP3s and MP4s? There is no way that cassets are going to make a comeback.

I didn't have a Walkman. But if it's any consolation my mother still calls cds "tapes". And I still own a portable cd player.

I've had two in my lifetime, one for cassettes which lasted me like a week, and one for CD`s which lasted for a couple years. And no, mp3 is the best portable music. You can have your whole library on the go.

Yeah, those things were the **** back in the day. Nobody in their right mind would buy a cassette these days though. Sony made a smart move in discontinuing them, but they do make Walkman mp3 players.

Ya know, it's fairly amusing this post would pop up considering that I just threw out a Sony Walkmen today.

I had a walkman, a couple of discman, and even one of those ridiculous mini-disk players.

I feel old. :(

I still remember my first walkman. It was red, blue and yellow. I loved that thing. Didn't have many casettes to listen to though, but I did keep repeatedly playing this Barbie Rock n Roll tape that came in free with the Barbie Rock n Roll doll.

I'm too young to have had one of those things. I did have a CD player (not sure which brand, I got it at Walmart for $20) for like 2 years before it didn't work anymore.

My family had its share of Walkmans back in the day. With the present in mind, however, I don't see the player making any kind of comeback.

i hung around a discman when i was a kid but i always stuck with the vinyl: it's the best format, especially if you're a jazz lover

I remember when Walkmans came out. Cassettes on the go was awesome. The Discman was dumb because it skipped if you were doing anything besides sitting, so my Walkman made it well into the mid to late 90s.

Forget about the walkman, who had a boombox? Those were da bomb!

A boombox and a piece of cardboard created MAGIC.

Yeah, I had a Walkman and a Discman. They were great and I didn't want to ditch my Discman for an mp3 player for a really really long time.

I used a walkman until '96 or so, my friends and I exchanged mixtapes. I kind of miss that.
Then I switched to mini disk and I bought my first mp3 player (with 64 MB haha) in 2000 or so.
