Absolutely, but do you believe you are no longer being yourself? Or simply bettered who you were?

EDIT-

Bettered your image, I should say.trust_nobody
Yes, i belive I've bettered myself, but I'm not a different person. life is a quest for constant self improvement.

Right, the same music appeals to you, the same things make you laugh, same things make you cry, same things turn you on, etc.

Life is a quest for constant self improvement, truer words have never been spoken OMG I'm saying it now...

I think when they tell you to be yourself in order to get a girl, they mean don't pretend to like the same things she does if you don't, that kind of thing.

I'm not a different person because I sh*t in a toilet instead of a diaper now, I've just realized and adapted.

It's usually true, I don't act like someone else, hence why I have no friends/girlfriends/people that like me.

It's odd that a concept so universally relevant as "self" is so commonly misunderstood.

I see what you're talking about. There are a lot of obscure ideas that us humans throw around.

the idea of peace, a utopia? sorry, never going to happen as long as we're humans.

Humans have no single, authentic identity, and so the goal of always "being yourself" with no regard for the social context is impossible to achieve.

Can you really consider the way you act when you're alone your "true personality?" as compared to the way you act in other situations?

I'd assume that the most comfortable one would feel would be their closest to "true" selves.

(on a side note.... why am I getting into a philosophical debate with a self proclaimed idiot :P)

That's simply because you are under the assumption that there exists a single, true self.

(Oh, and, I suppose that we're all idiots when it comes to certain things.)

yes, I believe that there is one self, but that we put on various "masks" for different interractions.

The latter clause sounds very much like Goffman. Have you ever studied dramaturgy?

I suppose that it's more a matter of semantics than anything at this point. What you would consider "being yourself" is what I would consider, "acting as you would when you're alone."

Maybe. It's too late to think.:P

You don't have to be a dick to be a tough guy.I have metvery few menwho meet the defintion of masculinity. Which could explain all of these threads looking for advice on this subject. Hold your head up high and go get it. If you screw up you learn from it and move on. Rejection isn't the end of the world.

Whew that's enough cliches for one day

Being yourself won't necessarily always get you friends of girlfriends.

But any you do make will be the best ones you'll ever have.
