The sad thing is everyone thinks its healthier for some reason. Its not, you dont get enough protein, fat and certain amino acids that your body needs. You can but most vegetarians dont.

Yeah. The smart vegetarians can do it well, but many of them turn out weaker and nutrient deprived.

I had a cousin that had to go to the hospital because she didn't get enough iron and became anemic (I think thats what its called), and that actually happens pretty often to vegetarians.
Benefits? Less saturated fat - in general. Also, you can act tremendously stuck up around everyone else, by claiming moral superiority because you don't eat meat.
[QUOTE="munu9"][QUOTE="shoeman12"]you don't get all the vitamins and proteins and nutrients you can only get with meat. oh, wait...shoeman12Actually, some special fats are found exsculusively in fish in high concentrations (omega-3) wait, would he still eat fish if he was a vegetarian? i've never really understand how they can do that. I have no idea, they make their own rules.

Completely wrong. You can get more than enough protein from nuts and soy. I get all I need and bonus so I still build muscle mass. There are vegetarian body builders. There is absolutely no logical or health reason to eat meat. Everything we need is supplied to us in plants.[QUOTE="JSDempsey"][QUOTE="magnax1"]

MMMMmmmm this chicken im eating is so tasty. As i said earlier, you can do it but most vegetarians dont. Especially in the iron and amino acids department.
[QUOTE="magnax1"]it makes them think they're better than meat eaters because they don't eat animals, it's like going green. it makes them feel good about themselves. That is just generalizing vegetarians. I dont eat meat and I don't feel as if I am better then any one else.Well the only real benefit is that you arent eating dead animals. If you aren't careful you can become unhealthy. I dont understand the idea of being vegetarian. People were obviously made to eat animals...... so eat animals.

well you don't have to worry about alot of health risks if I were you I would pick up Gandhi's autobiography for reference and deeper thought on the subject as that was one of his things he did was search thru alot of different things including meat to see what was for him he did alot of private work on dietics and I suggest the same for you to look into dietics and experiment on your own with different foods and stuff ad remember vegetarin isn't vegan. Good luck with your search for the right foods for you.

also I beleive it was vegetarians no vegans he was asking about.
My bio teacher says it's healthy, since meat isn't that great for you, and you can find all the important stuff in meat in other foods.awesomeface
The only non-meat source of substantial proteins is found in Soy, which has recently been proven to cause more harm than good when consumed in large amounts over time. A man actually began growing excess breast tissue because soy can have adverse effects on the endocrine system. Without protein proper cell synthesis can't occur because DNA can't be effectively copied without the use of amino acids which are also needed for forming various polypeptide chains.
Proteins also make up the majority of the bodys enzymes which are required to absorb the substrates. This is why so many vegetarians are so skinny. The body can't absorb everything it needs, thus it begins eating away at muscle tissues to removed stored proteins and adipose tissues.
[QUOTE="8-Bitterness"]well, benefits are that you get to be healthier if you know how to combine the vegetables n stuff, i would never give up meat tho D: and pasta is pretty awesome if youre a vegetarianXeros606hmm, tbh giving up meat completely is something i dont want to do entirely either. im really just thinking of it as a move to eating more natural food, as opposed to the crap i usually eat.
Well, if thats all your concerned about, I would suggest trying to find local markets that sell organic meat from natural grass fed animals, and not wholesale meat from the grocery store. It will be a little bit more costly, but it is defnitely the healthier way to go.
[QUOTE="observer77"]Welcome to Gamespot forums.everyone on here is just generalizing really people?

I'd say thanks but I've been here a while and it doesn't hurt to point it out. ( or do anygood) but it is a habit of hopes.
[QUOTE="Scarebaby"][QUOTE="dissonantblack"]
you get thinner and live longer.
mistervengeance
...wait what?
Being a vegetarian doesn't necessarily mean altering your body, and being thin doesn't mean being healthy. Also, I'd love to see some statistics on omnivores vs. herbivores life span, seriously what does that have to do with anything? Your physical condition is a combination of a lot of things such as sleep, stress, drug use etc, and though your diet has a big part in how healthy you are it is certainly not the biggest one.
uhh... yeah it is. diet is the single biggest factor of your health... you are what you eat. followed by excersize and then the amount of sleep you get. and then other minor factors like drugs and stuffBeing a vegetarian doesn't mean you're automatically skinny and healthy. There is a lot of 'crap' besides meat you can pollute your body with.
well being a vegitarian means that you will probably become healthier and lose weight... I don't know if you need to lose weight or not, but being healthy is always the #1 thing to care about yourself.
I always thought it was funny how people try to associate meat with being fat. It has much more to do with cheeses and sauces and sugars, I reckon.I just explained why being a vegetarian isn't the same as being healthy and skinny. ffs -.-

You can still get the same nutrients you would get from meat, You just have to get it from several sources instead of one. Not eating meat cuts down on cholesterol, saturated fats. You will also be consuming less antibiotics and synthetic hormones. There are benefits to being a vegetarian.
But without meat your missing alot of things your body really should have.

In response to one of your earlier comments, there are studies that show that vegetarians do live a few years longer than meat-eaters, on average. I'll try to find links to some if you'd like...I just explained why being a vegetarian isn't the same as being healthy and skinny. ffs -.-

in the same environment?JandurinI don't know. You'd have to assume, I guess, that the testers applied the scientific method correctly to the study. I'll try to find links to them and we can see. I think the main take-away from the studies that I've read was that vegetarians have less risk of coronary heart disease. But, I fathom that that would apply to people who just avoid red meat.
Among others that I've found, here's one of the most legit looking studies. The abstract shows that vegetarians, on average, live longer, but I haven't read the full text yet to see exactly why, or if they've come to any conclusions.
Edit - the study says that some of the sub-studies implied "very low meat intake" instead of "vegetarians".
