I would never want to live in NYC, but you can't beat the nightlife and excitement, its truly one of a kind. Also the cuisine and history is unmatched, theres truly no place like NYC.
LA IMO is an overatted, its so dirty, polluted, spread out, and the people are steriotypically either super snobby or super ghetto.
San Diego>LA
San Diego has all the great things that LA has an the crap LA has misses them. It also has better mexican food an is right there with Mexico which can be fun going for a 15 minute drive to Tijuana. The nightlife isn't really as crazy and there arn't celebrities everywhere, but unless your going to the club to drop 10 grand you can't even hang in the famous trendy LA scene anyway.
Chicago is better than both of those citiesFUBAR24I hate chicago. corrupt cops and city officials, super cold winters, and insane crime rate. Remember earlier this year when they had something like 50 shootings in a 48 hour period?
Quite frankly both cities on the list tended to look filthy.
I agree with whoever mentioned San Diego as being the best. That or Santa Barbara north of Los Angeles. I had a wonderful time at both places.
I have lived in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and I don't think it is that great. It has some nice areas like Santa Monica,Sawtelle, some parts of the Valley area, and West Hollywood. Other than that I can't think of many great parts. Most of Hollywood is a dump, the public transport system is pretty bad, and the city is too spread out for my tastes. I haven't been to tons of cities in the U.S, but to me Boston, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Raleigh, San Diego, and Minneapolis. I would like to see more of New York though. I found it a bit overwhelming the first time I went there. I don't tend to go for big cities like that, which is why I like San Francisco, and Boston. They are big, but they seem a bit more manageable. I would pick New York over Los Angeles if I had to.
let's be honest here, these are the only two american cities that matter. so which one is better? which would you rather live in?

Hmmmm...
I've lived in both LA and NYC. I hated living in LA, there are much better cities just in California. I quite enjoy New York City. But still, I would not call either the best American city.
They're both terrible cities.
Why else would Kurt Russell want to escape from both of them?

Best post ever.
Both New York and Los Angeles are putrid, IMO. I'd say Austin, TX is the best city that I've been to so far. It's not so big that it just sucks (like NY and LA), but it's big enough to have everything I need and want in a city. I hate cities in general.
New Orleans is the best American city.PoeticTheoryN.O. has been in the top 10 murder per capita cities for almost 20 years straight, has some of the most corrupt and racist politicians and system in general. BEFORE Katrina there was sprawling ghettos that resembled war torn countries. Also the city has a long history with co-operating and helping gangs and organized crime for under the table money. Also massive sections of the city are still destroyed from Katrina. Mardi Gras is the only amazing event, if you like aids, and The Saints are the only decent franchise. The cops did a test in the late 90s. They went into a crowded project and shot over 500 rounds of AK-47 rounds in the air during midnight. In a radius where almost 2,000 people lived, they only received 1 phone call reporting shots. Also the corrupt government practices the 60 day rule, only city in America to do so. Basically it states if the state cannot bring forth ALL of there evidence within 60 days to secure an indictment on murder charges the charges will be dropped and the person can never be charged of that same crime again. It created a environment where serial killers thrived. N.O. was, still is THE CITY to move to if you enjoy killing people in an urban environment because even murder cases with physical evidence rarely get to trial and witnesses know in 60 days they will die if they testify.
I have to go with Las Vegas or Denver.
I'm sorry but NYC and LA are just terrible places with crime problems, drug problems, gang problems and even traffic problems. I will never ever live in ether of those cities even i was making 100k a year, i would still not live there.
What does Baltimore have that NY doesn't? Other than '50s glasses and tacky lawn furniture (which you can get on Long Island anyway)?I've been to both, and can honestly say I wouldn't trade my hometown Baltimore for either 8)

lol..."the only two American cities that matter." I don't care at all about LA. NYC is highly interesting but not somewhere I'd ever want to be in for more than a week or two at a time. I'm all about Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, etc.t3hrubikscubeSeriously, this thread is extreme fail. You couldn't pay me to live in LA or NYC.

I was born and raised in Jersey, and I can honestly say I hate pretty much everyone from the Tri-State area lol.I've been to both, and can honestly say I wouldn't trade my hometown Baltimore for either 8)

I purposely avoid passing through LA in my travels through CA. Hopefully I'll never have the displeasure of going there again.
New York City, I'd only want to live in either LA or NYC though in the states. I hate small cities. Toriko42you better have alot of money if you ever do live here cause a small house in a roach, gang infested gutter in LA where you can lose your life over the color of your shirt, where finding a job is impossible and stepping on needles on the sidewalk is probable costs as much as a 2 story nice house in the suburbs in most US cities. NYC is pretty much the same too, except not as bad (violence wise) but if your not earning a decent wage and you live in NYC you will live in the projects, an sense you listen to east coast Hip Hop I'm pretty sure you have at least heard about how hard and short life can be there.
Trust me there are MUCH better cities to live in over here than LA or NYC, especially LA. San Diego is NOT a small city, its pretty big and it owns LA, the cuisine, the girls, the beaches are all better, also theres waaaaay less pollution and crime. Also its 15 minutes from tijuana which is baisically mexican vegas without giant casinos, well its waaay more wild than vegas, down there anything goes.
Thats just one example, I could name at least 20 US cities I would rather LIVE in than LA or NYC. I wouldn't wanna live in either personally. NYC is a different level man, I'm talkinbout non stop noise 24/7 in parts of the town thats pretty much unbearable and impossible to sleep thru unless you were born an raised there.
And LA just sucks.

you dont have to live in the Project and not all Projects are rough. Not everyone of them in NYC is Marcy (which isnt even that violent anymore) or L.G... Though if you do live in Brownsville, Brooklyn, good luck. A person with a decent wage can get a decent size apartment in NYC. They are building them EVERYWHERE now and are reasonable priced. There are also nice project buildings like the ones over in Kings Highway that can range from 300-800 a month. Not shoe sized either. Theres just so many alternatives, choices one can take.I've never been to New York City, so I can't comment on it.
But I live 15 miles east of Los Angeles, and it has its good and bad points. There are various attractions around the city. On the flipside, the bad points include ratholes like South Central LA and East LA-- absolutely full of graffiti, bars on windows, gangs, illegal immigrants, etc. etc. etc.
