Although, I'm not crazy about the alternative genre, I'm going to trust this guy solely based on his profile picture. :D
I suppose Godspeed shouldn't be confined to the alternative genre as they don't necessarily follow many conventions of the genre.
The 90's were one of the best decades for music. I can't just pick one favorite band though:P
1. Belle & Sebastian
2. Mansun
3. Pulp
4. Super furry animals
5. Psychotic Waltz
6. Porcupine tree
7. The Charlatans UK
8. Blur
9. Robyn Hitchcock
10. Smog
11. The Divine comedy
12. Anglagard
13. The Mountain goats
14. Teenage fanclub
15. The boo radleys
16. The Verve
17. The Pale saints
18. Saint Etienne
19. Kent
20. Akekdoten
I wouldn't disagree with you but the only problem with AIC is that they only had one masterpiece and Facelift starts off like it was going to be their first piece of master work but half way through the album to the end the band loose direction and come across as shallow and run out of ideas very quickly. Dirt though can't be touched. That album is critical manna. While bands like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins defined the 90's, had multiple master works and they are both gods. Radiohead on the other hand bores me to tears and I can't stand that whingy whiny vocalist Thom Yorke. But hey everybody has different tastes.Alice In Chains by a long shot.

Linkin Park, formed in California 19968)optiowThey didn't release an album until October 2000. 1 year off my friend. They are the best alternative band of the 00's though. At least in my book, but critics will debate that.
Alice in Chains is not alternative, and Pearl Jam isnt either and I wouldnt call Nirvana alternative....but o well
I am very glad to see The Smashing Pumpkins up there.
They are with out a doubt the best, though Radiohead fans will argue with me. :P

Linkin Park is the coolest thing ever to come out of Agoura Hills, but it's NOT a 90s band.

I was never a big smashing pumpkins fan. I liked Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness though. I put The Furry animals on my list: Radiohead are good too but not one of my favorites.

I know your not a big Pumpkins fan, it was a joke. :PAnd I didn't see SFA until you mentioned it my mistake. However i can make a huge list with bands you dont have on there, our taste varies quite a bit.
I find radioheads 2000's albums and work much better than their 90's attempts.I find the lack of Radiohead in this thread disturbing, the best band of the 90's by far...

I disagree, I think its one of the most overrated albums of all time. But I can see how many would give it the praise that it gets. Amnesiac, Hail to the theif, In Rainbows>>>>Ok Computer by far imo.[QUOTE="DamianAlexander"]

Kid A is only second to OK Computer to me.

Again I disagree.... I can't connect with that album. Its far to distant, which is ironic because thats the atmosphere it trys to convey; a desolate and hopeless fantasy land, that everyone moves so fast yet "he" fails to move at all.I just don't like the album to put it bluntly :P
Kid A is another album i find overrated however, i do appreciate what it's trying to do and have nothing against that album

Shame, maybe one day it will hit the spot.

- Subterranean Homesick Alien
- Exit Music (For A Film)
- Electioneering
- Climbing Up The Walls
- Lucky
- The Tourist

Hmm 13 years since the album has been released and I still havn't "hit" the spot ;)Maybe one of these days you'll listen to Amnesiac and In Rainbows and those albums will truly "hit" the spot for you:P
For me either Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, or Pearl Jam.
Listening to Kurt sing in nirvana always makes me sad. I Will always wonder what could've been after In Utero:cry:

You don't know me but I'm a die hard Radiohead fan. The only album I dislike is Pablo Honey.
The 90's was such a great decade musically, my favorites are:
1. Nirvana
2. Soundgarden
3. Rage Against the Machine
4. Stone Temple Pilots
5. RadioHead
6. Beck
7. Alice in Chains
8. Pearl Jam
9. Pantera
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers
11. Nine Inch Nails
12. Foo Fighters
13. The White Stripes
14. Blind Melon
15. The Black Crowes
16. Weezer
I'm going with Pavement.
joesh89
I never understood the appeal of this band, but that's just me.
For me, I think the best alternative acts of the 90s were Lush and My Bloody Valentine.
Pavement. :Dt3hrubikscube
I always think of them as an '80s band even though I know they only spent one year in that particular decade. I guess I just get this sort of Thelonious Monster '80s vibe off of them for some reason.
As for me...gosh there were quite a few bands from lot of differing little sub-genres weren't there? One of my top picks would be Versus whom I still listen to on a regular basis. As far as big acts go I was quite impressed with the solid output from Nirvana and Smashing Pumpking despite Billy Corgan's slow descent into megalomania. But really there were quite a few folks that put out solid efforts in the '90s like PJ Harvey, Afghan Wigs, Red House Painters, Sebadoh, Bjork, Sonic Youth, Tori Amos, The Pixies, Tori Amos, Lush, Garbage, blah blah blah.
For me either Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, or Pearl Jam.

i agree. oh what i would give to have just one more studio album from nirvana. "you know your right" was a great blend of nevermind and in utero sound. i would love to have had an entire album like that.
