Alice in Chains is not alternative, and Pearl Jam isnt either and I wouldnt call Nirvana alternative....but o well

I am very glad to see The Smashing Pumpkins up there.

They are with out a doubt the best, though Radiohead fans will argue with me. :P

mexicangordo

with the exception of nevermind every nirvana album was alternative. starting with vitalogy pearl jam became very alternative. im a huge pumpkins fan but i find it ironic that you would consider them alternative and not nirvana or pearl jam. i mean gish and siamese dream are pretty straight forward rock albums. melon collie is on the verge of being considered alternative but between both discs i think there is enough straight forward main stream rock to make it uncertain. this is just all my opinion obviously but to me the first truely alternative album the pumpkins released was adore.

My favourite bands of the 90's would be:

Garbage

Radiohead

The Cranberries

R.E.M.

No Doubt

Nirvana

Pearl Jam

and The Cardigans (yeah I know euro pop sucks, but they get a mention for Gran Turismo).

Thats of the top of my head, I missed a lot but those are the few I remember straight away.

My favorite album was released in the 90s by My Bloody Valentine, but that was only one album, and it was 1991. So, I will say either Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails.

You don't know me but I'm a die hard Radiohead fan. The only album I dislike is Pablo Honey.

DamianAlexander

Why is it that die hard Radiohead fans all seem to dislike Pablo Honey? I know it's their first album and not representative of how they sound in newer albums, but I find to be quite good. It's a solid alt rock CD in my opinion.

Well that's just not an easy question to answer. I would say Soundgarden, it's a shame that they couldn't hold it together, too much awesomeness I guess.

Radiohead.

[QUOTE="mexicangordo"]

[QUOTE="UserBane"]

I find the lack of Radiohead in this thread disturbing, the best band of the 90's by far...

DamianAlexander

I find radioheads 2000's albums and work much better than their 90's attempts.

OK Computer is one of the best albums of all time.

But it's their only truly great album from the 90's (The Bends was good, not great). The 00's have four Radiohead albums every bit as good as Ok Computer.

I never understood the appeal of this band, but that's just me.

For me, I think the best alternative acts of the 90s were Lush and My Bloody Valentine.

Shenmue_Jehuty

I didn't understand the appeal of Pavement at first either, but they really have grown on me in recent times.

[QUOTE="t3hrubikscube"]Pavement. :DLord_Daemon

I always think of them as an '80s band even though I know they only spent one year in that particular decade. I guess I just get this sort of Thelonious Monster '80s vibe off of them for some reason.

As for me...gosh there were quite a few bands from lot of differing little sub-genres weren't there? One of my top picks would be Versus whom I still listen to on a regular basis. As far as big acts go I was quite impressed with the solid output from Nirvana and Smashing Pumpking despite Billy Corgan's slow descent into megalomania. But really there were quite a few folks that put out solid efforts in the '90s like PJ Harvey, Afghan Wigs, Red House Painters, Sebadoh, Bjork, Sonic Youth, Tori Amos, The Pixies, Tori Amos, Lush, Garbage, blah blah blah.

Yeah, I can see what you mean by that...and good calls on Sebadoh and Sonic Youth. :D

I gotta give it to Collective Soul personally. I really like Nirvana, and yeah, I'd say they're one of the top 90's bands, but Collective Soul was better imo. Shine, December, Gel, Run, etc. were all great songs. They consistently released great music throughout the decade (and still do ;))

Nirvana could've been even greater had Cobain not killed himself.

My choices are probably not the popular ones here. But, I liked their tunes:

Cracker

Oasis

Counting Crows

I would say Radiohead, but I think I'd pick them for best of 00s since that's when they put out their best albums.

I really like this comment. Garbage are a brilliant band but they never got the recognition they deserved because they were a bit too mainstream friendly. Butch Vig is a genius on so many levels. Loveless was also one of the most memorable albums of the 90's if not of all time.

Yeah, that's what I meant. When you've got three big music producers in your band, it's bound to sound glossy and somewhat poppy, but I think that's precisely what I liked so much about Garbage. They have one of the strongest debut albums of all time, in my opinion.
