[QUOTE="seabiscuit8686"]Also, everyone is like "Catcher in the Rye," "The Giver," "The Great Gatsby," "Gone With the Wind," WTF.....did you actually like those books or are those the only books you've read (school made you). I guess to each his own, but seriously? Everyone on this site is like a poet or classical book lover?Nerd_Man
Read Catcher in the Rye in school or not, it is one of the few books I've ever read that got me absolutely hooked and fell in love with. I don't care about this "They made you read it in school; therefore it doesn't count" BS. But like you said, to each his own.

Although I disagree with you on Catcher in the Rye, I very much agree with your point on the absurdity of the "They made you read it in school; therefore it doesn't count" mentality. School reading has exposed me to some fantastic books (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Count of Monte Cristo, Invisible Man, Great Expectations, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Catch-22, The Aeneid, Herodotus' The Histories, Metamorphoses, The Stranger, A Light in August, and more).

I don't know whether I have a 'favourite' novel, though I enjoyed Time Enough For Love, Stranger in a Strange Land, Dune and 1984. I'm also enjoying the book I am reading presently: Footfall.

Misery by Stephen King. It's actually one of the only King books I actually like. I tried reading The Stand (one of his most popular works) and hated it.

Jerome K. Jerome's 'Three Men In A Boat'. I laugh out loud almost every page. A copy is permanently by my bedside.

[QUOTE="nakabear"]

it's series, actually.

twilight, new moon, and in august, eclipse.

they're by stephenie meyer-- good weekend reads.

guys probably wouldn't be interested in them though.. sorry.

I just got New moon as a gift, watched twilight to get a grasp of that part and now on to this, I agree its kind of wierd . Best book that I've read is an arabic one, nice thread to decide on what to read :) .

If I had to pick a single book it would have to be eiither The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown or Eragon by Christopher Paolini

My favourite series of books would have to be The Jason Bourne series by Robert Ludlum or maybe even the Hannibal series by Thomas Harris.

I also thought that The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne was brilliant

Right now?

However, I'm almost finished with this and it is definitely a contender for the title:

As a kid The High King from Lloyd Alexander influenced my reading more than anything book since.

I just recently finished the First Law Trilogy from Joe Abercrombe and loved it. I loved Lies of Locke Lamora, too.

I loved the first two books in a Song of Ice and Fire, but the third book felt like a chore and I gave up halfway through. I don't know if I'll wind up going back or not.

Count of Monte Cristo was a classic.

Congratulations, youre the only other person I know who even knows of that series.

Personally A Clockwork Orange, followed by Dune and 1984.

1984 is one of my favorites, as is The Hobbit, Animal Farm...

But my all-time favorite book is The Prestige. You may have seen the movie. It's horrible compared to it's source material. Hell, the movie hardly has anything to do with the book. Instead of saying "Based on the book" at the beginning, they could have just said "With names from the book, with our own stupid ideas thrown into it to try to make it more hollywoodish and appeal to the masses".

Greedo_What
Isn't that the point though.....to make money? Yeah, sometimes it sucks that they ruin a good story, but "appealing to the masses" sounds a lot better than "appealing to a few followers of the original material" from a business standpoint....
