Right, and youre saying Best Buy charging $130 to help people setup their PS3s isnt bad? Please. They do a lot more, like the bait and switch tactic.

I would say that's more a case of a few bad employees instead of a mandate from corporate to be dishonest.

Obviously they do. They learn all the skills and tricks to get people into doing unnecessary things. Heres a bunch of secrets revealed about Circuit City by an ex employee. Its even worse than Best Buy.

I have never had any problems with them...nothing but good experiences But a $130 is not unreasonable if they come out to your house How much do you think any service call to your house is (electrician, etc.) -usually $100 to drive out there plus more per hour -so $130 seems about right

That's not a fair assessment. The first Best Buy fixed it for free and correctly. Depends on the people. Just like with car repairs.

Do you know how easy it is to hook up a PS3? They could have made some pamphlets that had instructions. A 5 year old can hook up a PS3 to a TV, HDMI and composite.

I believe you had good experiences with them but many others have had bad experiences.

There are instructions with the PS3, but if someone wants to pay for such a service that is their call. Any service like that is going to be expensive.

The amount of ease involved is not the issue (yes I know, I have one) There many things that a plumber does or an electrician does that are just as easy...you have to pay no matter how difficult the job is (service call + 1 hour labor minimum) And there are pamphlets on how to hook it up...called the instructions If you are not smart enough to hook up your (or your kids) PS3, then that is the price you pay -same as if you are not smart enough/lack the knowledge or ability to be able to do minor repairs around your house

Ok, I like Best Buy's prices and products, but I have a serious vengeance with them. First of all let me start out by saying that Every time I've ever gone in Best Buy and asked a question about anything remotely technical, I get a half witted, non-intelligent response (*not saying everyone who works there is stupid, just the people I have encountered*) or they just don't know. A few years back when I was out of work, they wouldn't give me a job there saying I wasn't "qualified" for the position, and it make me think about my last statement. If you work in a store, shouldn't you be knowledgeable to the products you are selling? I just don't get it....I'm done with my rant, sorry :P

It's up to the individual if they want to spend the money or not. But yes, Best Buy is expensive for service.

I couldnt watch the video, since it wasnt working for me. But in general I like Best Buy. Besides their crappy customer service, and expensive services. They have a great variety of DvDs, PC games (Unlike Gamestop), and other accessories I look for. Usually I go with discounts

The Best Buys that are near me are all perfectly fine. I've only had one weird experience and it was a simple case of an employee not knowing what they have in stock. But to be honest the kid had JUST started there not even 2 days before.

As far as the prices for service, other posters have hit the nail on the head. It basically comes down to whether you're willing to pay it or not. Service is service, it will cost you. If you are so outraged by the prices you go ahead and start your own business and do house calls. See what running on deficit really is.

Sounds like a Geek Squad employee is not qualifyed or is completely lying. Never go to Geek Squad as they charge Best Buy prices aswell.

There's a few bad apples in any profession, it says more about the individual than the corporation they work for. There are doctors who try to sell you tests/procedures you don't need, mechanics who try to sell you maintenance work you don't need, and of course there are computer techs who try to sell you repairs you don't need.

$580 to repair the hard-drive and 70$ diagnosis fee? I could buy a new hard-drive for under $70.

Best Buy is bottom of the barrel for tech support anyway. An unplugged HDD is something anyone can plainly see when opening a PC.

Hard drives also don't cost $600 unless they're high end intel solid state drives. You can get a 1TB for $80.

They had their "engineers" check it out! LAWL:roll:

But seriously, that second store in Oregon, WTF. Did they honestly just run the diagnostic without ever opening the damn case at any point? Though the way the news is presented, who is to say that the HDD wasn't scanned? Perhaps it was infected. The Precinct in Washington Square bungled things a bit, but the way the report is presented leaves a few holes too many.

It depends. If you have a GS Precinct that is strictly "by the book," no way is any Geek Squad agent going to open up a computer without a signed release form. The reporter's metric for testing fails on that alone. In my case, if it had been me taking that computer in, depending on the response I got from the customer in my usual set of troublehooting questions, I might have taken in the thing as well. But at least I would have opened up the thing once I looked in the BIOS and noticed that no HDD is detected. At that point, I would have called the customer to see if they wished to continue with the diagnosis or just pick the thing up and refunded their money.

But from what we're presented with here, there's a gap that is left unexplained. But it's cooler to slam "teh corporations."

I guess I'm one of the lucky few who have gotten great service from BB. When I went in there to buy my HDTV, surround sound, and game systems the guys helping me were awesome. They were looking all over the place finding me better deals on their stuff. One guy showed me a tv that was bigger, cheaper, and a better brand than the tv I originally wanted (and it works fantastic still!), another guy saved me $150 off speakers because they had the same kinds sent back because the previous owner couldn't hook them up (they were pretty much new lol), and they even told me NOT to pay for their service to set it all up becasue they could tell I knew what I was doing and they assured me I wouldn't have a problem hooking it all up if I just read the instructions (I had to do that for the speakers only, but he was right). They didn't even push their warranty on me when I told them I'd be fine without it. I went over how much I paid for everything compared to how much I was originally going to pay on Amazon and I saved over $500!

I believe you. Ive had good service from them too. It does come down to the individual. This jackass was trying to sell me a $60 HDMI cable.
