Two words my friend: Trip-Hop. It is the most chill of the chill musical genres. I've seen several people mention these bands, but Massive Attack, Air, Morcheeba, the first Sneaker Pimps album, and Zero 7 are a good start.

I guess Chill-out is pretty hard to describe, basically just any type of music that goes well with just sitting around, having a lazy day in the sun when you don't feel like doing anything. The band that comes to the top of my head is massive attack, mainly because a lot of the music I hear I never find out who it's by but I always remember that music video with the fetus.. Can anyone recommend me some good bands that would sort of be similar to them or fit the kind of style? A lot of trancy and techno stuff seems to be good (currently listening to one track called The awakening (mellow mix) by York- pretty up tempo but still suits the kind of style I'm going for) and also I find that a lot of Latin style music (mainly with that style of guitar music) is really great as well.

October_Tide

Well i was going to recommend Massive Attack until you already know of them. And Im assuming you also know of Portishead... Try psychedelic music, its the most "chill" you can possible get.

Shoegazer bands are great chill-out music. Instead of recommending the tried-and-true shoegazer bands that were popular in the height of the era, I will recommend a newer band, Air Formation. If you like them, then you can get into shoegazer more, as they are pretty representative of the sound.

Thievery Corporation is amazing (Indra, All That We Percieve, Until The Morning (Rewound By Kid Loco), Shadows Of Ourselves...). Some Cafe Del Mar CDs are pretty good.

I also recommend the Lost in Translation soundtrack. Some good chill-out songs on there from Air, Kevin Shields, etc.

I would say Radiohead, probably because they're one of my favorite bands. And I know that some people might hate me for saying this.....Phish. They're chill, trey's a great guitar player. I used to be a phish head during the late 90's.
