Although im not sure if there is an actual best, but some of the greats are......

Satriani, Via, Van Halen, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Gilbert, and buckethead.

My favorite guitarist of all time has to be a tie between Stevie Ray Vaughn and Duane Allman. Those fools can shred it like no other. Duane Allman has such an amazing sound while SRV puts his soul into every performance and the result: guitar solos that blow my mind away completely.

Who is your favorite guitarist and who do you think is the best?

(don't just blindly say Jimi Hendrix if you've never even heard his music. bandwagoning doesn't make you cool)

95% of the time he is mentioned simply because hes the lead guitarist from Metallica, and none of his solos are particualrly outstanding except for One and Unforgiven.

John 5 is the best, at least in my opinion. Check the links if you guys haven't heard of him.

All of these deserve every bit of praise they get. Alexi Laiho is incredibly overrated. Out of the original poll, Jimmy Page is hands down the greatest guitar player.

kirk hammett isnt a good guitarist technique/skill wise...but he writes some crazy sounding good **** and most guitarist who are actually more technical than him dont even sound as good.

kirk hammett=student of joe satriani took lessons from him.

I dont really respect much guitarist who take lessons/lots of music theory...mostly souless wankers.

but kirk has a gift writing good stuff with the talent he has.

Some people might say dimebag is overrated...but he's probley writen the most heartfelt guitar solos ever heard.

Jimi Hendrix is my absolute favorite.

Stevie Ray vaughan as well. But there are so many amazing guitar players.

actually all Kirk does is play a bunch of pentatonics, and when he's lucky enough, he might come up with something interesting. I think that Kirk got lucky playing with metallica, James is a better guitarist imo.
