I got a close tie between the Original Nightmare on Elm street and The Excorsist.

Not a big fan of the genre but I'd go with The Thing, the original Nightmare on Elm Street, and Nosferatu off the top of my head.

The best is Vault of Horrors, would suggest to anyone who hasn't seen.. Saw (the first one only) masterpiece by it's self, Amityville Horror, [REC] Few others i'm forgetting.. IT, The Shining, can't think at the minute.. But that's an okay list :)

I know I'm going to be laughed at this for this, but my choices would have to be Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project. I realize how hated these films are, but they are two of my favorites of all time and the only movies that I DON'T wish to watch too often because I get freaked out just thinking about them afterwards. The Exorcist was scary, but the definition of out of sight out of mind. PA and TBWP kept me wondering long after the fact. I'll admit in comparison to the greats, when viewed objectively, they are fairly terrible films, with bad acting, shaky cams, etc. But what they attempted to convey, they nailed. They were horror in a context that was relatable. I sleep every night, and hell, it could be me wandering into the forest with a bunch of friends, no matter how annoying or incapable of using a camcorder they are. It doesn't take much from there.

Although I have to admit my exposure to horror films is limited as it's really not my favorite genre of film. Still, I'm not (too) ashamed to admit I love these hated gems. YEAAAAA.....
