No Mars Volta? What kind of list is this. Ill give you props for Ayreon, Porcupine Tree, and Riverside, but without The Mars Volta this list is not very awesome.

Also, props for no Opeth. They suck.

I only liked the first two Mars Volta albums, now they just annoy me. I was never really into them much. I appreciate their style but I cant listen to them for very long without getting a headache for some reason, maybe its the lead singers voice.

I was going to recommend something, but it was already on your list! darn!

edit* Actually you may be interested in checking out Dark Suns most recent album Grave Human Genuine. Their most recent stuff is a lot like Riverside imo.

Amputechture is their best album in my opinion. Vicarious Atonement probably being one of their best songs. But yeah, his voice is definitely an acquired taste. But hey, I like the singer of Coheed and Cambria so I probably just have bad taste. Anyways, which of these bands are similar to Ayreon, Riverside, Porcupine, and TMV. My prog well has been running a bit dry lately and I need some new music. (Im much to lazy to find stuff myself)

I think Bedlam is their best album. Just not enough noise in Amputechture to keep me paying attention.

Also, The Black Mages is pretty awesome. Even if you don't play Final Fantasy (Ive only played like one of them), the music is still pretty tight.

Bedlam was a dissapointment. Almost all of the songs sound very similar and there is just nothing special going on. They just feel like long rock songs. Goliath was pretty awesome, but Viscera Eyes is much better, imo.

I usually just use the term progressive when referring to most bands because almost all of them have at least a little of both. Ayreon mixes a goddamn ass load of genres. I particularly like "Connect the Dots". It feels so out of place because of how plain it is. I haven't listened to all of Rapid Eye Movement yet. Most of its pretty meh, but Rainbow Box is so goddamn awesome.

Not really. If you listen to Ilyena and then Ourobouros, there's a few major differences.

Velvet Revolver are awesome but they aren't prog rock. Wow, beaten to it several times already...

I guess some Tool songs could be called prog rock (as apposed to prog metal) so I choose them.

They were good, but the songs didn't stand apart enough that I remembered which track went with which name. Although, the same is also true for Francis, which was just a little too much frog croaking and not enough music. Definetly a good album, but not quite a De-loused, or a Amputechture.

Film-Guy

Understandable. They have a lot of "clean" songs with no death metal vocals, it's a lot different from their regular stuff.

Prog. as a whole is just awesome. I hate the typical structure of song writing, it's just so bland.

Agreed, prog rock is where the best and most original music and songwriters are, guys like robert fripp. john mcclaughlin, peter gabriel, and frank zappa can befound nowhere else.

I don't really like progressive rock. Prog Metal like Opeth and Tool are pretty sick. Post-Rock is where it's at though. Yndi Halda, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You, Set Fire To Flames, etc. are all really quite amazing
