I got to go with Van Der Graaf Generator, although their early stuff is what I mainly listen to. Most of my favorite Prog rock is from the 70's such as Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Genesis, Caravan, Twenty Sixty Six and Then, Yes, etc. 70's Prof albums never fail and are some of the best rock albums ever. The only true modern prog rock band I pay attention to are Porcupine Tree and a little bit of Tool. Just something about the sound of most bands now I can't get into.

Porcupine Tree and Tool

I dont like the death metal vocals in opeth songs but I think they are talented.

Dillinger Escape Plan isn't really a progressive rock band. Between the Buried and me isn't either, but they cover quite a few genres in a song so I guess you could call them that

Know about 3/4 of them, but you forget I'm old and cranky, so I stick to what I like these days. My best friend, whose musical tastes are as close to mine as anyone I know tried to get me into AFI, The Killers, and about 5 from your list. Hated them all.

:( Indie isn't a genre. It's a way of producing music.

It's accepted as a genre nowadays. Just like classic rock.

yeah, the new Mars Volta stuff is very cliche for a prog album. I'm personally more into the prog metal scene (THreshold, Queensryche, Tool, etc.).

Haha. THe Killers need to get a singer whose voice doesn't crack every few seconds. I saw them perform live, then again on SNL, and they received very few claps.

Protest The Hero has some elements of prog in it, although it's metal (not like scary I might get stabbed sacrifice metal).

Well, despite this being an ancient thread, I guess it was worth the revival since a band member posted and since I get to learn about some progressive rock bands I haven't heard of yet. :P
