Since I've only seen a handful of movies, I'll have to go with The Dark Knight and Burn After Reading.  They're probably the only two worth mentioning that I've actually seen this year, although I really don't think TDK deserves the title.  I really want to watch "Let the Right One In".

jubino

I dont know if it is getting a wider release, I doubt it. Worth tracking down though.

Indeed, I'm going to try my best to find it. I don't think it ever came out where I live. I tried to look for it but could never find it in any of the local theaters. Anywho, did you know that someone in the US is already planning to do a remake of it, slated to come out in 2010? Nothing on there yet, but it's on imdb.

yeah, the Cloverfield director is doing it, which imo is a terrible choice. If you cant find the movie then try and track down the book, that should be easier.

Its finally open in my state, I might just have to make a short little trip to go see it, been dieing to and have heard nothing but great things.

The film is missing some interesting backstory from the book regarding the gender of one of the main characters. It is kinda disturbing in the book and it is only hinted at in the film.

Good advice. I might just have to make a trip to B&N tomorrow to see if they have it. In your honest opinion, which is better? Movie or book?

They are both great in their own ways, the book goes into more detail than the film, but in a way the subtleness in the film adds rather than detracts. Its tough, might be best to read the book first though.

I still havent seen Wall-E, is it really that good? I was kinda dissapointed by Cars. I want to see a more mature animation film like Waltz with bashir, a scanner darkly, and Persepolis.

Wall-E was amazing, pure and simple. A Scanner Darkly is a good film as well, though I haven't seen the other two that you mentioned (I'm interested in them, though, especially because of Samwel_X's review of Waltz With Bashir.)

Yes, he will be, and I'm really curious about how that will turn out. Hopefully it's not him selling out and making a Michael Bay CGI-fest. It's possible he could do a great job with it, but I still have my doubts.

Hopefully it will be better than Robocop 2 and 3, those sucked.

Wall-E isn't exactly mature (i.e., not dark), but it's really good for an animated film. I haven't seen Cars, but I've heard it wasn't nearly as good as Wall-E.

Well, it's a bit hard to pick something like this since most people wouldn't even see a tenth of the movies released in a single year but I've got a list of four which are my favourites. In no specific order:

Juno
American Gangster
Wall-E
Rocknrolla

haha sorry...but they aren't from last year where I'm from. Both came out in 2008 in Australia so for me I'm including them but if you insist then I'll go for Wall-E, Burn After Reading or Rocknrolla

I'm going with the Dark Knight, WALL-E as a close second, because there wasn't really  a lot of movies I liked this year.

It's a shame I couldn't watch Let The Right One In.

Persepolis was great as well... that is available on DVD now, definitely worth a rental. Although Waltz was far superior.

I think it has a december limited release in the US. I'd imagine a region 2 DVD will be available in March, region 1 maybe April. I'll blog about it when it comes :)

For me its,

- Tropic Thunder
- Iron Man
- The Incredible Hulk

All great movies but I still have to watch more like Burn After Reading, I didn't really like The Dark Knight though, I gave it an 8.0 just for Heath Ledger's great performance as The Joker.

Regarding Dark Knight, I was rather disappointed. I prefer Batman Begins actually, at least the first half.

i was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. so many movies get touted as "family entertainment" merely because they appeal to children. wall-e actually offers entertainment that adults can really take to as well. the environmental commentary is a bit heavy handed (which i usually dont like), but it is for a reason (even the kids will get it).

Well my number one is The Dark Knight, it was a masterpiece. It's one film I can watch over and over and there aint many that you can do that with.

In Bruges was really good, don't judge it from a preview, it was great. That be my second.

I don't watch movies alot, so The Dark Knight would be the best of 2008.

Oh and another film, Rocknrolla, that was another great film, love it.

Film-Guy you never disappoint.  I was hoping there was someone one else who would agree with me:

1.  Slumdog Millionaire - Best movie I've seen all year and an instant cIassic in my book.  Just...brilliant.

2.  Wall-E - Pixar's pure masterpiece.

3.  Let the Right One In - My only way to put it:  Beautifully haunting.  The swimming pool scene is my pick for most memorable scene of the year.  Remake =

4.  The Dark Knight - No need to explain this one.

5.  In Bruges - What I thought was going to be a dark comedy turned out to be that and much more.  Great film.

There's still tons of movies I want to see that will probably change this list significantly.  Doubt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Australia, Frost/Nixon, Synecdoche, New York, The Visitor (which is on DVD so I really should see it), Revolutionary Road, Milk, The Reader, Gran Torino, and I've only heard about The Wrestler...still have to watch the trailer.  It's turning out to be a pretty darn good year for movies.

I'd say Wall-E since I haven't seen Burn After Reading or any other movie on your list.

Don't have as much time to watch movies.

For a comedy, I would say Tropic Thunder.
