There are some great ways to open movies, these are my favorites though.

1. Once Upon a time in the west

2. Intermission- Right in the face!

3. Happiness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDEjQp6q_pQ

Really sets the tone for the rest of the film. Hilarious too.

4. Halloween

5. Gangs of new york- Such a ridiculous and brutal fight scene.

6. Apocalypse now

7. Touch of evil

8. The Player- great single shot.

9. Blade Runner

10. Raiders of the lost ark

11. 8 1/2

12. Lord of war

13. Ghost ship- Horrible film, but my god what a great opening scene.

14. Running Scared- Great close combat shootout. Brutal film and very underrated too, paul walker was great in it.

15. Trainspotting

16. A Clockwork orange

17. Citizen kane

18. The Seventh seal

19. Way of the gun- Underrated film, very fun and has another punching in the face like Intermission. Funny how I have two favorite opening scenes that end with a girl being punched in the face.

20. Jaws

21. Memento

22. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

23. South Park: Bigger longer and uncut

24. Aguirre: The Wrath of god

25. Cube

26. Munich

27. Seven samurai

28. Amores Perros

29. Hard Boiled- John woo's classic.

30. Harold and Maude- Suicide is hilarious

31. A Serious Man- Such a contrast to the rest of the film

32. Blue Velvet

33. 12 Monkeys

34. 28 weeks later- Shame the rest of the film wasnt as good as the opening.

35. Amelie

36. In The loop

37. Raising Arizona

38. Gladiator

39. Patton

40. Four weddings and a funeral

Leon is a good one. And The Blade Runner also.

EDIT: And Lawrence of Arabia. That prologue is excellent.

As much as I like Episode I, the opening text scroll was HORRENDOUS. Compared to the other ones, which detailed growing evil, rebellion, and the very first word of Episode 3 which just said "War!", Episode I talked about trade and taxes. WTF Lucas? But that and Jar-Jar are my only complaints for it, highly underrated IMO.

Star Wars Episode III was pretty freaking BA, but I must also consider that I was 14 when I saw it for the first time. :P

The Dark Knight

I really liked the opening of 500 Days of Summer too.

It doesn't matter how old you are, Episode 3 was the perfect opening. The opening text scroll with tons of buildup about war, the end of all things, a critical mission for the dying republic, then two mysterious ships flying side by side over a big cruiser above Coruscant, John Williams brilliant music slowly building up, the fighters flip, and BAM! MASSIVE space battle with giant cruisers, starfighters, lasers, and explosions going everywhere, and then we see it's Obi-Wan and Anakin. I don't care how badly you desperately hate the prequels for whatever reason, that was an excellent opening.

Seriously. Why the hell would the cops wait so long, why didn't anyone notice the gun fire, where is security, and didn't anyone notice the gaping hole left by the school bus? WTF?

GoldenEye had a very good opening sequence. Out of that list, I'd pick Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Even so, the graveyard scene was pretty powerful, and it meshed really well into the Normandy breach. I think they both count as the opening of the film.

This.

One of my favourite scenes in The Sopranos is in The Blue Comet season 6. Tony, Silvio and Bobby are in a restaurant talking 'business' and then the Intermezzo (Cavelleria Rusticana) starts playing in the background and Tony and Silvio stop what they are talking about and copy this scene. That scene alone made me seriously consider The Sopranos as a better show than The Wire.

I just finished episode 2 of the third season. So much happened between the last episode of the second season and the first of the third.
I was half expecting Nate to be having some sort of out-of-life experience in the first episode, especially with the deja vu flashbacks. Also, I'm ****ing paranoid now because I have been having headaches on the right side of my head for months. :?
Watchmen comes to mind quickly. Love the opening credits too. Inglorious Basterds as well. Tarantino really knows how to write great intros.
