Bob Dylan destroys all... in my humble opinion. Of course in all seriousness there are many great lyricists, but Dylan is the only one who has pierced my soul. His music is special to me. Although I enjoy all kinds of music.

Nick Cave, I don't really know if I would classify Tom Waits as a "Rock lyricist"

But overall he might be my favorite lyricist ever

I like dylan, but the way some of his fans describe him as some kind of god does annoy me a bit. I prefer Neil Young who I forgot to put in my list. Damon Albarn is also a pretty good songwriter.

I would say Phil Anselmo and then Kurt Cobain, and maybe Trent Reznor.

I dont know how to classify Waits either, but rock lyricist is close enough:P I cant listen to Waits too much though because of his vocals. Nick Cave is amazing though, I am looking forward to his new book coming this september:D

Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Ben Gibbard (from Death Cab), John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Morrissey, and Frank Zappa (for making songs out of the bizarre).

Forgot about Zappa, he is quite unique. I actually have a book of Poetry by Leonard Cohen, some really fantastic stuff in there.

ive always liked dax riggs' lyrics. hes a pretty wierd guy, so it fits that his lyrics would be beyond the ordinary. plusyou can really tell the decline in lyrical quality in other acid bath related bands that dont have riggs.

paul masvidal is a great lyricist as well. he wrote some very cryptic material to match cynic's style. i get the impression that he wrote the lyrics for portal as well. they were more straight forward to match portal's more minimalist style, but still poignant.

I've always liked Maynard James Keenen, because his lyrics are very abstract. Therefore, easy to relate to. There are better ones, though

Some obvious ones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits. Some less obvious ones, Alejandro Escovedo, John Hiatt, Paul Westerberg, Shane MacGowan, Steve Earle, Kristin Hersh.

Pretty hard to stop, I'm sure I'm missing a lot.

Some nice picks on the list, but I think Cohen needs to be WAY higher. I mean, below Richey Edwards, Gabirel and Roger Waters? Cohen is in another league, in my humble opinion.

Anyway, a few more favourites...

Morrissey

John Darnielle

Neil Young

Jeff Magnum

Ian Curtis

Nick Drake

but Cohen surpasses them all.:P
