Recently I've seen this said about District 9. But I really don't have any frame of reference since I haven't seen that many science fiction movies this decade.

So...anyone think it might be sort of fun to sort of discuss what IS the best science fiction movie of the decade? For starters, let's all just throw out some contenders. Just name 3 or 4 of the best science fiction movies you've seen during this decade, and let's see who wins.

And btw, I know that there are many District 9 threads, but this isn't one. If you think that District 9 is one of the best of the decade, then by all means go along and put it on your list. But this is NOT a District 9 thread. And if you want to play along, you don't even have to mention it.

starship troopers (yes i know it is 12 years old, sue me),

i am legend (i suppose it is science fiction),

star wars episode 3-revenge of the sith,

district 9 (this is mainly because there aren't that many good sci-fi movies made any more)

Children of Men, The Prestige and Serenity are three great Sci-Fi movies this decade, don't know if they are the best though. Also Sunshine, minus the third act. Haven't seen Moon or Star Trek.

District 9 takes the cake because of how bad science fiction has become. Best of all time is 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3, Star Trek, and District 9 sounds like a contender. But who knows how well James Cameron's Avatar will fare...

Star Trek, Moon, District 9 are all contenders. I personally liked District 9 and even Pitch Black quite a bit. Serenity was pretty solid too.

I wouldn't say its bad, its really just non-existant. All the really good sci-fi was last decade, like The Phantom Menace, Terminator 2, The Matrix, etc.

We're obviously not counting movies that haven't been released yet. When a movie is released in October and a critic says "the best movie of the year", it's understood to mean "the best movie of the year so far".

So after we pick a winner here, we can pick this up after Avatar is released in December. If Avatar is almost unanimously agreed to be better than the previous best, then Avatar will become the New Best Science Fiction Movie of the Decade.

Its recent but I thought 'Moon' was one of the best to come out in a while, very interesting and atmospheric with an amazing performance by Sam Rockwell.

Yes, I know that... I'm just not saying one that has not yet been released will be the best, because I haven't seen it yet. Isn't that common sense?

And BTW, here's how this is going to work. I'm going to give it a couple of days (let's say that I'll consider all nominations that are gotten in before Tuesday, so as not to give an unfair bias to the weekend crowd).

After nominations are in, no more new nominations. I'll then compile all of the nominations, and eliminate any ones that weren't released this decade (by "this decade", I'm including the year 2000, even though this decade didn't technically start until 2001). I'll then start a new thread with each of the contenders, and we'll decide which one wins.

If Children of Men can be counted as Sci-Fi, than easily that...pretty much everything else this decade has been pretty terrible, standard fair that survived just through special effects and nothing else.

Thats easy. Minority Report.

I cant believe how so many people are forgetting it. Its one of the greatest movies of this entire decade overall, not just in science fiction. Its also the last great movie Steven Spielberg has made.

Star Trek, though honestly I haven't seen many Sci-fi movies this decade. The only other one worth a mention was I am Legend, and that wasn't very good. The first two blow it away.

Friday I went by myself because none of my friends wanted to go on a Friday night. Yesterday I went with my brother and he paid and today I am going with my friends. I thought it was better the second time honestly. And hell yes I will be buying it on Blu-Ray.
